I want to personally welcome each of you to Corning Community College’s Fifty-first Commencement. On behalf of CCC’s Trustees, administration, faculty and staff, I extend best wishes to the members of the Class of 2010. Whether you are a relative, friend, graduate or a member of the CCC community, this exercise should be enjoyable, informative and rewarding. At Corning we celebrate the teaching and learning process, and today this event is the culmination of these efforts. Members of the College community’ have labored to provide these candidates with the intellectual discipline, ethical principles and practical skills needed to excel in their chosen field. Whether they are pursuing additional degrees or entering the world of work, we fully expect members of this class to be successful in the pursuit of happiness, gentle in competition,and tolerant of fellow human beings. Gifford’68, Schuyler County Mr. Patrick Donnelly, Steuben County 2 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement History of the College Under the sponsorship of the Coming-Painted Post School District, Corning Community College opened its doors in September 1958 with eight faculty members and a student body of 118. The new college was led by 32-year-old Dr. William Lee Perry and located in a Coming School District building on Chemung Street. By 1960, the College enrollment increased to 350 full-time students and 260 part-time students with the number of faculty doubling to 16. By fall 1963, the College moved to its current location on Spencer Hill and received its first Middle States accreditation in June 1964. When Dr. Perry resigned in June 1966, full-time faculty had grown to 70, divided into six academic divisions. Dr. Robert W. Frederick, Jr. became CCC’s second president in July 1966. The College celebrated its 10th birthday in 1968 with a graduating class of 524— nearly 10 times the size of the first graduating class in 1960. In 1970, the College added the Nursing Building, increasing classroom capacity by 25 percent. In 1971, a new maintenance building helped increase classroom space by moving maintenance staff out of the academic buildings. When Dr. Frederick resigned in 1975, the number of full-time faculty had risen to 84, divided into eight academic divisions. Also, the Goff Road facility had been added to the College’s facilities. When Dr. Donald Hangen accepted the position as CCC’s third president, the student body had grown to 1,952 full-time and 832 part-time students. Dr. Hangen served the College as president until 1994. His administration saw the addition of the Learning Resource Center and the Business Development Center. In 1993, the College had only 1,717 full-time students, but soared to 2,221 part-time students; combined, full- and part-time students accounted for the greatest number of credit hours taught in the College’s history. It was also the second year that part-time headcount would exceed full-time headcount, a trend that has remained consistent to the present time. A critical change in CCC’s operation occurred in the middle of the Hangen administration as the Corning-Painted Post School District became unable to support the College, and the College developed into the first regional community college in New York. Unlike other 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement 3 New York community colleges, Corning receives funding from its service counties through a chargeback system that provides revenue based strictly on the number of students from each county. Under this system the College continues to prosper. When President Hangen resigned in 1994, the College had already begun to see a decline in enrollments that would continue into the next century. Dr. Eduardo Marti became the College’s fourth president and would have to face the College’s first extended period of declining student numbers—difficult for a college whose revenues were strictly tied to enrollment. By the time Dr. Marti resigned in 2000, the College had added the Airport Corporate Park facility housing automotive and machine tool technology programs. Overall enrollment numbers were down approximately 13 percent from their high in 1993. Dr. Floyd “Bud” Amann became CCC’s fifth president in May 2001. During Dr. Amann’s administration, the College engaged in its first-ever Major Gifts Campaign, providing much needed capital dollars to help refurbish facilities built during President Perry’s administration more than 40 years earlier. The College has seen tremendous growth in its off-campus enrollments, including a near doubling of students in its high school concurrent enrollment program. In August 2007, the Academic and Workforce Development Center in Elmira opened its doors to address the need for skilled employees, attract new jobs to the region, and to assist entrepreneurs and established businesses be more successful. The Center has exceeded all expectations and is now home to almost 1,000 students. The College is currently engaged in the implementation of a Facilities Master Plan that includes new athletic facilities, expansion of Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library, and renovation of the Commons Building. In June 2009, the College entered into a feasibility study focused on the possibility of developing student housing on the Spencer Hill campus. It is expected that a decision will be made by early summer 2010. The College is experiencing record breaking enrollment and has considerably enhanced course offerings to accommodate the needs of additional students. We are truly a community college and proud of it. ■ 4 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement The Mace If a college mace traditionally represents the authority of the college faculty and the hope for excellence, it is appropriate that the mace of Corning Community College was commissioned by the faculty of this institution. In 1960, the faculty created a fund for a permanent gift to thank the community and friends of the College for their support. Robert Goodden of the Royal College of Art in London was brought to Corning in the fall of 1961 to meet with a committee of the faculty to ascertain the spirit which this modem mace was to symbolize. It was agreed that the mace would be crafted in silver of a modern design, and that it was to express the hope,- liveliness and excellence inherent in the beginning of any institution of higher learning. At the same time, the faculty wished the mace to be an expression of the mind of a creative artist, and thus the design and execution of this work of art was placed in Robert Goodden’s hands without restriction. The mace was crafted in London at the Royal College of Art, by members of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, to Professor Goodden’s design and under his direction in 1964. The crystal apex was formed by the artists of Steuben Glass. The Medallion Corning Community College’s inaugural medal was commissioned in spring 1967 and was presented to President Robert W. Frederick, Jr. on May 18,1967. The medal, designed by John M. Runyon, then Associate Professor in Ait, is cast of silver. The center design has four points, representing the community, trustees, students and faculty. The raised center represents the presidency, which draws together and fuses the endeavors of each of the points. 2010 Coming Community College 51st Commencement 5 Faculty Academic Attire The caps, gowns and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning. When colleges came under secular control in the 1300’s, particularly in England, a touch of color was added to the academic garb. Thus the gown for graduates of many English universities is of a scarlet color. With the founding of colleges in the American colonies, the tradition of the academic gown became established on this continent as well. The academic hood originally formed the cowl worn as a head covering by the monks. It could also be worn as a shoulder cape, or could be used as a bag for the collection of alms, or for carrying books. The outside of the hood is bordered with a velvet facing, the color of which indicates the subject studied for the degree granted. The length of the hood indicates the degree earned, the doctoral hood being the longest. Today’s candidates for associate degrees and certificates are wearing gowns similar in style to those worn by candidates for the bachelor degree. Their caps are worn with the tassels hanging on the right side until the degree is actually conferred whereupon the tassel is moved to the left side. Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society The gold stole and gold tassel signify membership in Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. Graduates wearing these symbols have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above. 6 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement Pennons This ancient symbol marks the accomplishments of those who are being honored at this commencement ceremony. The five pennons represent the certificate programs and the four associate degrees offered at Coming Community College. Those who carry the pennons symbolize excellence in each area. A pennon became the symbol of achievement during the Middle Ages and, as such, the degree pennons used in today’s ceremony symbolize the achievement of this College’s graduates. A long, narrow flag or streamer, triangular and pointed, the pennon was formerly attached to the head of a lance and was borne as a distinction by the knight. Upon the performance of any gallant action by a knight or his followers, the triangular point of the pennon was cut off, thereby converting it into a banner of distinction and achievement. Hall ‘68 and Harold F. Hall ’68 This is the first time in CCC’s history that brothers who have accomplished so much in their lives are united as award recipients. Twin brothers Dr. William “Bill” Hall and Harold “Harry” Hall graduated with distinction from Corning Community College in 1968 with an associate’s degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities & Social Sciences. The Halls continued their high school lacrosse skills onto CCC by helping to organize the first lacrosse team at the College. Dr. William Hall received a bachelor’s degree at SUNY Geneseo as well as a master’s and a doctoral degree in Sociology from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He taught sociology at Alfred University in 1980, directed the Criminal Justice Studies program, and achieved the rank of full professor. In 1997 Dr. Hall was promoted to Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences where he spent the next seven years. He served as Acting Provost from 2004 until 2006 and Dean of the College of Business from 2007 until 2010. He assumed the duties of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2009. His research interests include juvenile justice, program evaluation and policing which have led to publications in many numerous national journals. Dr. Hall has authored a number of chapters in various books and presented papers at national and regional meetings. He received research grants from the National Institute of Justice, Manley Trust, and Seth Sprague Educational and Charitable Foundation. He was the primary investigator on a $3.6 million grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. As a professor, Dr. Hall received many citations for outstanding teaching and was awarded the Order of Merit by Alfred University in 1999. His civic responsibilities include service as an elected Alfred Village Trustee for seven years, mayor of the Village of Alfred for 2070 Corning Community College 51st Commencement 13 seven years, and a legislator of Allegany County for five years. He also received the Alfred Lions Club Citizen of the Year award. In his free time, Dr. Hall volunteers as a member of the board of directors of the Allegany County ACCORD Corporation which is a non-profit organization that provides support for people needing social services. He was presented with the Allegany County Consortium on Domestic Violence Outstanding Member of the Year Award in 2000, and was recognized a second time for his service to ACCORD in 2002. Mr. Harold Hall received a bachelor’s degree in English Education and a master’s degree in Education, as well as a Certificate in Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Oswego. He started his career in education at Sodus Central School District teaching English for grades 7-12. After nine years of teaching, Mr. Hall became assistant principal and was later promoted to principal of Sodus High School. In 1983, Mr. Hall relocated to Addison, NY, when he accepted the position of principal for Addison Central Schools. He was subsequently promoted to assistant superintendent in 1988. Mr. Hall retired as superintendent of schools for the Addison School District in 2003. In 1991, Mr. Hall served on the board of the Greater Steuben Area Red Cross serving as chair from 1996-1998. He has been very active in all facets of the Chapter. During his tenure as Chapter Chair, volunteer representation increased significantly with Mr. Hall taking a leadership role in every committee. While working tirelessly for the Red Cross, Mr. Hall also found time to serve in both the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity, Addison Community Center, and Addison Health Center. He worked with a committee to bring a youth center to the Addison area. In 2009, Mr. Hall was recognized as a local recipient for the esteemed Jefferson Award for Public Service. An additional 30 to 40 credit hours are earned in a program core or major concentration of study. This concentration is chosen based on the student’s intended transfer major and may include technical, program or free electives. Students earning an Associate in Science degree are generally destined for transfer to a four-year college. Gifford’68, Schuyler County Mr. Patrick Donnelly, Steuben County 2 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement History of the College Under the sponsorship of the Coming-Painted Post School District, Corning Community College opened its doors in September 1958 with eight faculty members and a student body of 118. The new college was led by 32-year-old Dr. William Lee Perry and located in a Coming School District building on Chemung Street. By 1960, the College enrollment increased to 350 full-time students and 260 part-time students with the number of faculty doubling to 16. By fall 1963, the College moved to its current location on Spencer Hill and received its first Middle States accreditation in June 1964. When Dr. Perry resigned in June 1966, full-time faculty had grown to 70, divided into six academic divisions. Dr. Robert W. Frederick, Jr. became CCC’s second president in July 1966. The College celebrated its 10th birthday in 1968 with a graduating class of 524— nearly 10 times the size of the first graduating class in 1960. In 1970, the College added the Nursing Building, increasing classroom capacity by 25 percent. In 1971, a new maintenance building helped increase classroom space by moving maintenance staff out of the academic buildings. When Dr. Frederick resigned in 1975, the number of full-time faculty had risen to 84, divided into eight academic divisions. Also, the Goff Road facility had been added to the College’s facilities. When Dr. Donald Hangen accepted the position as CCC’s third president, the student body had grown to 1,952 full-time and 832 part-time students. Dr. Hangen served the College as president until 1994. His administration saw the addition of the Learning Resource Center and the Business Development Center. In 1993, the College had only 1,717 full-time students, but soared to 2,221 part-time students; combined, full- and part-time students accounted for the greatest number of credit hours taught in the College’s history. It was also the second year that part-time headcount would exceed full-time headcount, a trend that has remained consistent to the present time. A critical change in CCC’s operation occurred in the middle of the Hangen administration as the Corning-Painted Post School District became unable to support the College, and the College developed into the first regional community college in New York. Unlike other 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement 3 New York community colleges, Corning receives funding from its service counties through a chargeback system that provides revenue based strictly on the number of students from each county. Under this system the College continues to prosper. When President Hangen resigned in 1994, the College had already begun to see a decline in enrollments that would continue into the next century. Dr. Eduardo Marti became the College’s fourth president and would have to face the College’s first extended period of declining student numbers—difficult for a college whose revenues were strictly tied to enrollment. By the time Dr. Marti resigned in 2000, the College had added the Airport Corporate Park facility housing automotive and machine tool technology programs. Overall enrollment numbers were down approximately 13 percent from their high in 1993. Dr. Floyd “Bud” Amann became CCC’s fifth president in May 2001. During Dr. Amann’s administration, the College engaged in its first-ever Major Gifts Campaign, providing much needed capital dollars to help refurbish facilities built during President Perry’s administration more than 40 years earlier. The College has seen tremendous growth in its off-campus enrollments, including a near doubling of students in its high school concurrent enrollment program. In August 2007, the Academic and Workforce Development Center in Elmira opened its doors to address the need for skilled employees, attract new jobs to the region, and to assist entrepreneurs and established businesses be more successful. The Center has exceeded all expectations and is now home to almost 1,000 students. The College is currently engaged in the implementation of a Facilities Master Plan that includes new athletic facilities, expansion of Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library, and renovation of the Commons Building. In June 2009, the College entered into a feasibility study focused on the possibility of developing student housing on the Spencer Hill campus. It is expected that a decision will be made by early summer 2010. The College is experiencing record breaking enrollment and has considerably enhanced course offerings to accommodate the needs of additional students. We are truly a community college and proud of it. ■ 4 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement The Mace If a college mace traditionally represents the authority of the college faculty and the hope for excellence, it is appropriate that the mace of Corning Community College was commissioned by the faculty of this institution. In 1960, the faculty created a fund for a permanent gift to thank the community and friends of the College for their support. Robert Goodden of the Royal College of Art in London was brought to Corning in the fall of 1961 to meet with a committee of the faculty to ascertain the spirit which this modem mace was to symbolize. It was agreed that the mace would be crafted in silver of a modern design, and that it was to express the hope,- liveliness and excellence inherent in the beginning of any institution of higher learning. At the same time, the faculty wished the mace to be an expression of the mind of a creative artist, and thus the design and execution of this work of art was placed in Robert Goodden’s hands without restriction. The mace was crafted in London at the Royal College of Art, by members of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, to Professor Goodden’s design and under his direction in 1964. The crystal apex was formed by the artists of Steuben Glass. The Medallion Corning Community College’s inaugural medal was commissioned in spring 1967 and was presented to President Robert W. Frederick, Jr. on May 18,1967. The medal, designed by John M. Runyon, then Associate Professor in Ait, is cast of silver. The center design has four points, representing the community, trustees, students and faculty. The raised center represents the presidency, which draws together and fuses the endeavors of each of the points. 2010 Coming Community College 51st Commencement 5 Faculty Academic Attire The caps, gowns and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning. When colleges came under secular control in the 1300’s, particularly in England, a touch of color was added to the academic garb. Thus the gown for graduates of many English universities is of a scarlet color. With the founding of colleges in the American colonies, the tradition of the academic gown became established on this continent as well. The academic hood originally formed the cowl worn as a head covering by the monks. It could also be worn as a shoulder cape, or could be used as a bag for the collection of alms, or for carrying books. The outside of the hood is bordered with a velvet facing, the color of which indicates the subject studied for the degree granted. The length of the hood indicates the degree earned, the doctoral hood being the longest. Today’s candidates for associate degrees and certificates are wearing gowns similar in style to those worn by candidates for the bachelor degree. Their caps are worn with the tassels hanging on the right side until the degree is actually conferred whereupon the tassel is moved to the left side. Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society The gold stole and gold tassel signify membership in Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. Graduates wearing these symbols have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above. 6 2010 Corning Community College 51st Commencement Pennons This ancient symbol marks the accomplishments of those who are being honored at this commencement ceremony. The five pennons represent the certificate programs and the four associate degrees offered at Coming Community College. Those who carry the pennons symbolize excellence in each area. A pennon became the symbol of achievement during the Middle Ages and, as such, the degree pennons used in today’s ceremony symbolize the achievement of this College’s graduates. A long, narrow flag or streamer, triangular and pointed, the pennon was formerly attached to the head of a lance and was borne as a distinction by the knight. Upon the performance of any gallant action by a knight or his followers, the triangular point of the pennon was cut off, thereby converting it into a banner of distinction and achievement. Hall ‘68 and Harold F. Hall ’68 This is the first time in CCC’s history that brothers who have accomplished so much in their lives are united as award recipients. Twin brothers Dr. William “Bill” Hall and Harold “Harry” Hall graduated with distinction from Corning Community College in 1968 with an associate’s degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities & Social Sciences. The Halls continued their high school lacrosse skills onto CCC by helping to organize the first lacrosse team at the College. Dr. William Hall received a bachelor’s degree at SUNY Geneseo as well as a master’s and a doctoral degree in Sociology from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He taught sociology at Alfred University in 1980, directed the Criminal Justice Studies program, and achieved the rank of full professor. In 1997 Dr. Hall was promoted to Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences where he spent the next seven years. He served as Acting Provost from 2004 until 2006 and Dean of the College of Business from 2007 until 2010. He assumed the duties of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2009. His research interests include juvenile justice, program evaluation and policing which have led to publications in many numerous national journals. Dr. Hall has authored a number of chapters in various books and presented papers at national and regional meetings. He received research grants from the National Institute of Justice, Manley Trust, and Seth Sprague Educational and Charitable Foundation. He was the primary investigator on a $3.6 million grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. As a professor, Dr. Hall received many citations for outstanding teaching and was awarded the Order of Merit by Alfred University in 1999. His civic responsibilities include service as an elected Alfred Village Trustee for seven years, mayor of the Village of Alfred for 2070 Corning Community College 51st Commencement 13 seven years, and a legislator of Allegany County for five years. He also received the Alfred Lions Club Citizen of the Year award. In his free time, Dr. Hall volunteers as a member of the board of directors of the Allegany County ACCORD Corporation which is a non-profit organization that provides support for people needing social services. He was presented with the Allegany County Consortium on Domestic Violence Outstanding Member of the Year Award in 2000, and was recognized a second time for his service to ACCORD in 2002. Mr. Harold Hall received a bachelor’s degree in English Education and a master’s degree in Education, as well as a Certificate in Advanced Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Oswego. He started his career in education at Sodus Central School District teaching English for grades 7-12. After nine years of teaching, Mr. Hall became assistant principal and was later promoted to principal of Sodus High School. In 1983, Mr. Hall relocated to Addison, NY, when he accepted the position of principal for Addison Central Schools. He was subsequently promoted to assistant superintendent in 1988. Mr. Hall retired as superintendent of schools for the Addison School District in 2003. In 1991, Mr. Hall served on the board of the Greater Steuben Area Red Cross serving as chair from 1996-1998. He has been very active in all facets of the Chapter. During his tenure as Chapter Chair, volunteer representation increased significantly with Mr. Hall taking a leadership role in every committee. While working tirelessly for the Red Cross, Mr. Hall also found time to serve in both the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity, Addison Community Center, and Addison Health Center. He worked with a committee to bring a youth center to the Addison area. In 2009, Mr. Hall was recognized as a local recipient for the esteemed Jefferson Award for Public Service. The student also completes a program core or concentration of courses ranging from 25 to 48 credit hours based on a particular course of study.
