Allison - Whitman Elected R. L. Perry Appointed Academic Dean Dr. Rollin L. Perry Corning Community College Is most pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Rollin L. Perry as Academic Dean of Corning Community College, effective September 1, 1962. He will succeed Dr. John L. Joy, Professor in Biology, who has served as Acting Academic Dean for the past year. A native of this area, Mr. Perry was graduated from the Waverly High School and received his B.A. degree from Hobart College and his M.S. degree in Education from Cornell University. Mr. Perry is currently Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Science at Cornell University, and prior to that position he joined Cornell University in 1947 as Assistant Dean of Men. While at Cornell he served as Chairman of the Advisory Board for Underclassmen, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee of the College, Chairman of the Selection Committee of the College, and as a member of the Academic Records Committee. His many associations with the administration of Cornell University have given Mr. Perry a wide and excellent knowledge of the functions and problems of college administration. President Perry stated that Corning Community College is most fortunate to have on its administrative staff such a well-thought of and highly qualified man, and the College is very happy to welcome Mr. Perry to Corning. Weekends Big Night Tonight Part of this year’s Spring Weekend has passed with Barefoot Bermuda Day which was held yesterday. However, there is much more to come! Tonight at the Corning Country Club, there will be a nightclub, with the theme Caprice Brillante. This event starts at 8:00 p.m., to continue until midnight. This will be no ordinary nightclub, as the talent is to be provided by students of Corning Community College. Featured acts include a folk singing group, a female vocalist, pianists, and several surprises. Watch for Bob Finlay—he’ll be around too. Mr. Herbert Gross of the college math department, and advisor to the Weekend, will act as Master of Ceremonies. Between the acts, a combo provided by Mr. Crupi (?) will supply good dancing music. Tomorrow is devoted to activities and eating. From 1:00 p.m. on, there will be organized and unorganized activities, consisting of touch football, badminton, softball, horseshoes, croquet, etc. During this time, lots of traditional picnic food will be available. At 8:00 p.m. there will be a banquet, with steak as the main course. All of the activities for tomorrow will take place at the South Entrance and Pavilion of Watkins Glen, New York. This weekend promises to be lots of fun, so let’s see everyone out letting off that last burst of steam before finals. Circle K Notes On Tuesday , May 15, Circle K Club members were guests of the Corning Kiwanis at their weekly luncheon. New officers of the club were announced and installed. They were as follows: President, Bill Taylor; Vice President, Wally Poland: Secretary, Larry Allison; and Treasurer, Bob Thomas. Larry Allison is from Corning and is a 1961 graduate of Corning Free Academy. His high school activities included the Theater Guild, French Club, Wrestling and Track. He is enrolled in the General Education - Humanities program at the college and is the Art Editor of the Yearbook and the Secretary of the Circle K Club for 1962-63. Craig Whitman is from Elmira and he graduated from Southside in 1961. He was active in sports in high school and a member of the baseball and basketball team. Also, he was on the Student Council for three years and a member of the Spanish Club. He is enrolled in the Liberal Arts program here at Corning. Pat O’Leary is from Elmira and she graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1960, and Jean Summers Business School in 1961. While at the Academy Pat participated in Future Nurses, Future Teachers of America and Glee Club. She was an officer in the Student Council. At Corning, she has been the Historian for B.T.W.A. Joan Kiehle is from Dundee and graduated from Dundee Central School in 1960. Joan was the Secretary of Dundee Chapter of National Honor Society, President of Future Teachers, Editor of the School Newspaper and on the Yearbook Staff. She attended Harpur College for one year. Since coming to Corning she is a member of B.T.W.A., Crier Staff, Yearbook Staff and appointed Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Student Association. The opposing candidates for President and Vice President were Russ Tarbell and Jane York. There was no opposition for the office of Secretary and Treasurer. Candidates petitioned the student body from April 16 to April 19, 1962. They were required to appear before the Election Committee headed by Jerry Wilcox on April 24. The Committee interviewed the candidates in order to establish their eligibility. The Campaign officially began April 26. Posters were placed in every conceivable place and were both humorous and serious. Large banners and balloons also appeared. Allison Election speeches were held behind the Administration Building on May 3, 1962. The function was attended by a fairly large and enthusiastic crowd. Each candidate presented a brief outline of his platform and ideas for the college year 1962-63. After the speeches refreshments and Lou Cicconi’s Hi Fi’s were made available by presidential candidate Tarbell. The voting was held in the Administration Building. The Elections Committee utilized a voting machine. Volunteers manning the machine reported voting was light with a total of 175 votes cast. On Sunday, May 20, 1962, a dinner meeting will be held at President Perry’s home on Spencer Hill. At this time the 1961-62 Student Association Board and its officers will turn its powers over to the newly elected officers. The new student administration has pledged to work for the following goals: 1. An enlarged Intramural Program 2. Social Frats and Sororities if the students want them 3. Pickett Promoted Corning Community College has named Mr. Herbert R. Pickett as Financial Vice President of the College. Mr. Pickett is currently Business Manager and will assume his new office on September 1, 1862. Since joining the College in July, 1959 as Administrative Assistant and Instructor in Accounting, Mr. Pickett has handled the business affairs of the College and has directed the Evening General Studies Program. Prior to coming to Corning, he was employed by Peat Marwick Mitchell, a public accounting firm in New York City, as a staff accountant. Mr. Pickett was graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and Al- bany State College with a Master of Arts degree. Upon graduation from Cornell University with an M.B.A., the assistant dean of the Business School commended his outstanding record in the business program. He was also recipient of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants award for superior scholarship in accounting. President Perry stated that “Mr. Pickett has demonstrated fine abilities in his work and has contributed a great deal to the organization and administration of the College. We feel most fortunate to have such a superior gentleman associated with us and are looking forward with happy anticipation to continuing this association. Corning's Athletics Recognized Nineteen Corning Community College athletes and cheerleaders received awards Friday, May 11 at the 4th Annual Sports Luncheon. Judy Rigly and James Dennis, members of the Athletic Board made the introductions. The 41 students, faculty and coaches were greeted by President Perry, who thanked them for their activities and pointed out that they should look forward to the new campus with an all student recreation center. John Hillman, Craig Whitman and Jack Wills received letters for basketball from Coach Bob Shaddock. Coach Reed distributed the charms for soccer players. They are as follows: Two years—Larry Marsh, Gary Hughes, and David States; one year awards — Jim Davis, Don Force, Dave Frasier, Pat LeBarbara, Paul Schnepelsky, Dave Stewart, Dave Tremaine and Bob Knapp. ... The action stemmed from Mr. Deuel’s Sales Class when each student was required to make a presentation in front of the class. Michaels - Stern Clothing London Fog Rainwear Recent Faculty Appointments The appointment of Mrs. Genevieve Garland and Mr. William E. Dolan to the staff of the Corning Community College has been announced. Mrs. Garland will assume the duties of Assistant Librarian for Cataloguing and Technical Processes on September 1, 1962. She received her B.A. degree from the College of Charleston and her B.A.L.S. from Columbia University. Currently librarian in the Corning City School District for the Beaver Valley and Kent Phillips Schools, Mrs. Garland has also served as Technical Librarian for the Corning Glass Works. Mr. William E. Dolan of Orchard Knoll, Big Flats, will join Corning Community College as a full-time Instructor in English, effective September 1, 1962. Mr. Dolan has taught in the Corning Summer Session in 1960 and 1961 and is teaching freshman English in the evening program this year. Mr. Dolan was awarded his B.A. degree from Johns Hopkins University and will receive his M.S. degree from Elmira College this June. He is also engaged in graduate study for his doctorate degree at Syracuse University. During the past few years Mr. Dolan has taught English in the Elmira High Schools and has taught freshman English at Syracuse University. Wellsburg, N.
