Abstract

Description

A torsion test is the measure of a material's shear modulus. A series of torques are applied to a sample while monitoring its angle of twist until the material fails. This image depicts the failure modes of different types of materials. Left is brittle failure of cast iron at a 45 degree angle. Right is ductile failure of alloy steel at a right angle.
