Abstract
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice and conversational style for promoting health change behaviors and eliciting a patient's own motivations to improve follow-through. It is currently not trained across most health disciplines at University at Buffalo, despite clear cross-disciplinary research evidence of effectiveness, for instance in medical, dental, nursing, rehabilitation, pharmaceutical, public health, substance abuse treatment, and social work settings. This Motivational Interviewing Coursera course will use scenarios across the health disciplines to demonstrate MI. The class will be designed to build entry-level MI skills. The short-term goal of the 16-hour MOOC developed through this grant is to provide training in Evidence-Based Practice that can be integrated as a supplement to professional coursework or a pre-requisite to other training across professional healthcare practice disciplines in the SUNY system. The medium-term goal is to build a professional learning community across health professions to increase interprofessional activities and competitiveness for external funding.
