Abstract

Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. But unless one has experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand. The poverty simulation bridges that gap from misconception to understanding. It is an interactive immersion experience that sensitizes participants to the realities of poverty. During the poverty simulation, participants will take on the identity of someone living in poverty. Participants will work together with a family to live a month in poverty. Session Goals and Outcomes Participants will gain an increased awareness of poverty. Participants will examine their own behaviors while "living" in poverty. Participants will examine the challenges of living in poverty. Participants will discuss opportunities to impact poverty in their communities.
