Abstract
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy focuses on mindfulness techniques, (DBT) addressing maladaptive thought processes, and the acceptance of emotions and symptoms. While originally created for treatments with those with borderline personality disorder it has been found effective in use with those post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The two disorders share a number of similarities, such as difficulties with interpersonal relationships and emotional dysfunction. This project examines some of the research surrounding the use of DBT and its effectiveness when used with PTSD. Through this examination it will be shown how mindfulness and acceptance of the validity of the individual’s emotions positively affects clients with PTSD. The project will also investigate what the literature states are the most important when using mindfulness techniques.
