Abstract
This presentation will address the inadequate quality of economics education provided to high school students in the United States, with a particular emphasis on the NY State system. Topics addressed will include the under-representation of economics majors in Social Studies teaching positions, topics omitted from the NY state standards, the bias within existing provided economics education, and the potential socioeconomic and political consequences of an economically illiterate population.
Having identified the problems, this presentation will then seek to address the sources of the current inadequacy, topics such as private versus public schools, the teacher certification exams, and even teacher pay will be addressed. The presenter will then seek to recommend potential policies to improve the state of economics education, in keeping with the recent movement towards analytical and critical thinking within the Social Studies curriculum.
