Abstract
This project investigates various barriers to achieving a proper nutritional balance that is necessary to maintaining overall physical and mental wellness. It focuses specifically on barriers encountered by individuals who are of low socioeconomic status and living in the inner city. Investigation of these barriers is important for an understanding of disparities existing within low-income, inner-city populations in order to facilitate change. Knowledge of the current context of nutrition will inform social workers of barriers and potential strategies to work within the restrictions of the individual circumstances, family, community and larger political climate. Recommendations from this project will assist social workers and other interdisciplinary healthcare professionals to work effectively with individuals and families to overcome nutrition barriers, encourage and foster healthy change at a community level, and advocate for increased access to nutrition for underserved areas on a political level.
