Creating and Sustaining an Inclusive Community
Abstract
This year’s theme, “Creating and Sustaining an Inclusive Community,” emphasizes the actions of
Respect, Compassion and Open-mindedness to create a stronger and more positive learning, working
and living environment for all Brockport students, faculty, staff (including Rochester Downtown Campus,
REOC, Visual Studies Workshop campuses) and the community. We will explore important values that
help us build and nurture our community through dialogue that addresses the challenges that face our
society, as well as our growth in understanding and acting upon issues of diversity and inclusive
excellence. Our goal is to encourage a positive climate on campus, within the community and the world
through teaching, inspiring and helping others.
Additionally, in partnership with the Academic Planning Seminar Summer Reading Program, this year's
keynote address will be given by Francisco Cantú — writer, translator, and the author of The Line
Becomes a River, winner of the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for the National Book
Critics Circle Award in nonfiction. Cantú was as an agent for the United States Border Patrol from 2008
to 2012, working in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. A former Fulbright fellow, he has
been the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Award, and an Art for Justice Fellowship. His writing
and translations have been featured in The New Yorker, Best American Essays, Harper’s, and Guernica,
as well as on This American Life. A lifelong resident of the Southwest, he now lives in Tucson, where he
coordinates the Field Studies in Writing Program at the University of Arizona.
