Abstract
How does a choreographer begin with a simple idea and arrive at a performed piece? This presentation shares research through a choreographic lens. Using the historical research around the postmodern Judson Dance Theater artists of the 1960s, a 2013 reimagining of some of the most broad aesthetics are represented. Using the dual lenses of minimalist, stonefaced, task-based work juxtaposed with maximalist, theatricalized dance, a particular challenge is presented to both dancer and audience. A cerebral experience, asking performer and viewer to engage kinesthetically, intellectually, empathically, and with a sense of humor, “Eight Dancers Make a Mess” sets the stage for an interactive historical document. Through the collaboration of eight dancers and choreographer, nine distinct voices are present, with one unmistakable driving force: the living presence of historical research through the social community of dance.
