Abstract

To enhance retention in the BSN traditional major, the nursing department would like to add HCS 230 Medical Terminology to the array of nursing prerequisites. This course engages the student inn a systematic study of medical terminology with emphasis on constructing, pronouncing, understanding, and using medical terms. This course includes diseases, symptoms, and signs of disease; diagnostic and clinical procedures; and treatment modalities. Many nursing students have taken this course as an elective and find that this course reinforces concepts learned in other prerequisite courses and has aided is student success in the nursing program. Nursing faculty advisors have suggested this course in the past as an elective, but would like to make this course a required prerequisite.
