Abstract
In an interview recorded November 4, 1982, Carolyn Forche discusses her Slovak grandmother, living and writing poetry in El Salvador, and her education and process as a poet. A poet and human rights advocate, Forche received her B.A. in International Relations and Creative Writing from Justin Morrill College of Michigan State University, and her MFA from Bowling Green State University. She is well known for works such as "Gathering the Tribes" and "The Country Between Us," both collections of poetry. She starts off the interview by reading her poem “Endurance” from "The Country Between Us." She continues by discussing how being raised by her grandmother influenced her writing and her label as a political writer, and then reads “Selective Service." Forche then talks about how she began writing poetry, her early influences in her writing, and her specific writing process. She ends the interview by discussing the reception of eclectic poetry in popular culture.
