Abstract
This project addresses the issue of grief and loss and specifically how schools can support youth (K-5) through school-based interventions. Death is very often viewed as a family matter and can be a very uncomfortable topic that is rarely openly discussed with children. Childhood grief can potentially impact a student’s academic performance, well-being, and behaviors in school. Therefore, it is essential for schools to learn the most effective ways to provide support and interventions to address grief and loss. This project reviews the literature on grief and loss in childhood, the impact on school performance, and school-based intervention models and makes recommendations about the best approaches for schools to use to support children coping with the loss of a loved one, specifically the loss of a parent.
