Abstract
The following presentation illustrates how the New York Times and The Times (London) reported the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake with at least 52 aftershocks causing an estimated 230,000 deaths. Implementing media theories such as news framing and crisis news coverage, newspaper articles before, during, and slightly after the event were analyzed. The thematic analysis focused on the frames used by both media sources in covering the event. The implications of these news frames can be vast due to the powerful agenda-setting positions held by these prominent sources. The news frames used by these sources can impact not only ideological views of Haiti and the Third World, but even foreign policy and relations.
