Abstract
The mere purpose of this interview is to understand the historical significance of Italian Immigration through a personal lens. The method in conducting this interview is to establish a connection between the interviewer and interviewee, so personal questions can be answered. Every Italian immigrant has their story. In this case, Luciano Apadula shares his unique story of immigrating from Salerno, Italy to New York. He immigrated to the U.S. with his parents, brothers and sister at the age of five. This decision in immigrating became important in keeping the family together. From Luciano’s perspective, the journey from Italy to the U.S. was interesting, especially for a young child. It was a completely different scenery from what he was used to. Once he and his family arrived, they went to their apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He describes the neighborhood as rather pleasant and inviting, since it consisted of mostly Italians. However, Luciano struggled in a school setting. He didn’t speak the common language, therefore, faced with racial discrimination. Yet, he grew up relating to an Italian American who stays true to his Italian values while living in America. Now Luciano is currently an antique shop owner. This interview resulted in genuine answers that perfectly captures an Italian immigration experience. These findings are significant in understanding one of many Italian immigrant backgrounds. It opens your eyes to a different kind of life and journey.
