Abstract

Recipients of the Art of Fact Award, Diane Ackerman and Paul West each read excerpts from their respective bodies of work. Diane reads from "The Moon by Whale Light", "The Natural History of Kissing", "Birthday Poem", and "Ode to the Alien". West reads "supplements" to the "Portable People" including "Colonel Doolittle's Amputee", "The Phantom at the Opera", an unnamed piece he'd written about his father and childhood, and "Ellen Ripley". At the end of that reading, he gleefully asks the audience if they'd seen that movie, "Alien: Resurrection". Paul reads a piece titled "Walter VonGoggleyed" as a proof to someone who he indeed does remember his own childhood. West shares several notes addressing critics, publishers, conversations, and childhood. West goes on to share limericks he jotted down as he was writing "The Dry Danube: A Hitler Forgery". When the reading is concluded, both authors take questions from the audience.
