Abstract
A young, blind Chinese girl named Jessie Gutzlaff arrived at New York City in 1842 with Mrs. Mary Gutzlaff, wife of famed missionary Karl Gutzlaff. After a short stay at the Institution for the Blind at Columbus, Ohio, Jessie was sent to Albion where she stayed nearly ten years with Ann and Jane Middleton. As a " conscientious worker," Jessie spent the latter portion of her life proofreading 52,679 pages of American Braille within 426 titles at the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind.
