Abstract
The diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease has increased, with a global increase of 47.5% between 1990 and 2019. Biologic medications are often used in moderate-to-severe cases of inflammatory bowel disease. Biologics suppress the immune system, which places individuals prescribed these medications at risk of opportunistic infections and vitamin deficiencies. This project evaluated the use of an electronic dashboard to improve health maintenance markers in patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease receiving biologics. This was a 12-week plan-do-study-act design. There was a total of 46 patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and receiving a biologic medication. Baseline data showed laboratory monitoring at 67%, bone density testing at 45%, tuberculosis testing at 54%, and pneumococcal vaccination at 33%. The influenza vaccine for the 2023-2024 season was 68%. Utilizing the electronic dashboard showed an increase in all five dependent variables and showed laboratory monitoring at 94%, bone density testing at 96%, tuberculosis testing at 96%, pneumococcal testing at 78%, and vaccination for influenza at the end of the study was 78%. The care of patients with inflammatory bowels disease is complex and requires commitment from medical professionals to provide up-to-date care. Electronic dashboards can assist medical professionals with providing this type of care.
