This project studies the impact of institutional racism in the healthcare field and the effects on health disparities between the inner city African American community and the dominant White majority in the United States. This research focuses on health disparities such as low birth weight, diabetes and obesity and what interventions organizations are doing, internally and externally, to address this disparity gap. This project contends that institutional racism is prevalent in the healthcare field and that diversity and inclusion practices must be considered so that everyone has equal access to quality services. Recommendations at the individual, group, community and organizational levels will be made from the social work perspective.
