Abstract

This resolution affirms SUNY-FCCC’s more than fifty-year record of shared governance and responds to SUNY’s updated General Education Framework—effective Fall 2026—which adds DEISJ as a required Knowledge and Skills Area and Civic Discourse as a Core Competency. It emphasizes that successful implementation of these requirements depends on faculty engaging students in complex and controversial topics, even as the current political climate has contributed to a chilling of academic freedom. The resolution calls on the SUNY Chancellor, Board of Trustees, campus leaders, and local boards to strengthen and safeguard academic freedom protections, and urges the Chancellor and SUNY Legal Counsel to provide clear guidance and clarify legal protections for faculty teaching DEISJ, Civic Discourse, and other subject areas.
