Abstract

Stan Sanville Rubin interviews Marvin Bell. Marvin Bell was the Flannery O'Connor Professor of Letters at the University of Iowa. He was Iowa's first poet Laureate, was the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, held Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, and held Honorary Doctorates at both Albert University and Union College. He has authored many works of poetry including his most well-known collection "The Book of the Dead Man". This interview is kicked off by Bell reading "The Book of the Dead Man Poem No. 1" and "More About the Dead Man", "The Book of the Dead Man No. 13", "More About the Dead man and Thunder", and the Preface of "The Book of the Dead Man", all from the same publication. This new interview, six years later, focuses mostly on "Nightworks", Bell's most recent publication at the time of filming. Stan and Marvin discuss the change in Marvin's writing style over the last decade and what he thinks of the opinions offered by other writers about that change. Bell then reads the last stanza of "Initial Conditions" from "Nightworks". The rest of the interview is a deeper exploration of "The Book of the Dead Man". Additional readings by Bell include "About the Dead Man's Not Telling", "More About the Dead Man's Not Telling", "Shakespeare Expected", "Shakespeare Dismissed", and "No. 21".
