Abstract

This paper addresses the importance of including family in drug and alcohol treatment for adolescents. It investigates if family involvement in treatment for young adults is a positive impact on preventing relapse and further use as well as building stronger relationships within the family. This topic is important because the number of adolescents and young adults that are struggling with drug and alcohol addictions continues to increase. Furthermore, continued adolescent drug use can result in numerous negative implications for the youth’s future. Family can play a significant role in prevention of further drug use or relapse; however, there are very few policies that allow treatment centers to integrate family therapy as a billable service. This paper will investigate how treatment facilities can incorporate families into their services while remaining mindful of ethical and cultural considerations. This project will provide recommendations for social workers and other professionals on methods on enhancing family involvement and advocating for improved policies.
