The narrative of those whose voices were oppressed or forgotten guides how we understand and interact with each other today. These voices exist in the traces and whispers of archives and ephemera. Gossamer thin, their stories remain part of our unspoken and unwritten common psyche. They become threads woven into the tapestry of contemporary, every day fabric. They wait to be found and heard, and to give us a full understanding of our collective milieu. This presentation examines the artists’ book Sepian Stars. Based on archival research, Sepian Stars uses press photography and poetry by Langston Hughes to explore the dichotomy between how race is perceived and how it is experienced by the other.
