Abstract
In light of recent data showing that more United States’ students are unprepared for the rigor of college science education, this paper examines the developmental and educational experiences at the high school level that influence college readiness. Using survey data collected from interviews with approximately 20 first year undergraduate biology students, this study seeks to understand student perceptions of college preparedness and identify predictors of success. Using a grounded theory approach, interview questions focused on the high school to college transition, and identifying where potential disconnects exist between high school and college. By examining the disconnects the exist between high school and college science education through the experience of first year college students, both high school and college educators can better prepare students for a successful educational career in science.
