Abstract

This is a digitized scrapbook created by the pupiIs of the Fourth Grade of the Brockport State Normal Campus SchooI, as they watched the construction of the new normal school building from the sidewalk, from Sept. 1938 through Spring 1939. It contains writings, drawings and photographs of what is now called Hartwell Hall on the campus of State University of New York at Brockport. The physical book is one-of-a-kind and resides in the Rose Archives at SUNY Brockport, Drake Memorial Library.

Description

The book contains this Forward, by the fourth grade teach Ora Van Slyke: When John D. RockerfeIIer Jr. saw crowds of peopIe standing for hours absorbed in the work of steam shovels, derricks and dump trucks constructing Radio City, he provided an observation pIatform where they were privileged to watch in safety and rapture. Out of this developed the Sidewalk Superintendents Club of New York City. The first junior chapter of this organization was installed in the Fourth Grade of the Campus SchooI of the Brockport State NormaI, September 12, 1938 when work on the new normaI schooI officially began. In the mother chapter no records of the meetings are kept but in the junior chapter the members took part in discussion that followed the sidewalk observations, asking questions that were answered by the resident engineers. Not onIy were the questions answered but interesting explanations of technical processes were given. This collection of snapshots, original drawings and stories, records chronologically not only the history of the buiIding of the schooI but aIso the growth of the members in observation and in technical knowledge. Dedication: TO Our principaI, Dr. Ernest C. HartweII who made the new normal school possible and to Mr. Charles E. Heydt, state engineer and Mr. Murray A. Bruckman, federal engineer who made this book possible.
