Abstract
Since 1950, the City of Buffalo has lost 55 percent of its population. This loss can be seen across the city in vacant lots. 15.7 percent of all land in Buffalo is vacant, amounting to approximately 16,000 vacant lots. Over 6,500 of them are owned by the city. These statistics are daunting, but they are also abstract and have minimal affective power. This presentation sets out to visualize those devastating statistics, using some of more than 3000 photographs of city-owned residential vacant lots, images meant to start conversations among viewers and spark ideas about the entirety of the urban crisis. The presentations also details clues to the vacancy problem and possible solutions to it.
