Abstract
The articles that comprise this issue reflect something of the diversity of our faculty. Each one is evidence of an interest in a research problem, or a challenge to creativity, requiring persistence and talent to bring to fruition the initial insight that stimulated the writer's attention.
Professional achievements begin with personal curiosity, but they possess public as well as personal significance, because they grow out of the soil of our professional environment: the institutions and professions that originally nurtured us; the colleagues and students who continue to stimulate our powers of intellect and creative invention. They are also public, because they are being communicated in a retrievable form, shared with the profession and thereby benefiting other engineers, scientists, or humanists.
These articles are a reminder, too, that teaching and scholarship go hand in hand. They compliment each other, sometimes in quite unexpected ways, broadening the perspectives of our _students as well as the larger community of
scholars.
With these thoughts, I salute our contributors, and invite members of our college community to submit articles for future issues. Moreover, we always welcome suggestions and comments. All correspondence should be addressed to:
