Description
Dr. Robert F. Furchgott was an extraordinary scientist who made major contributions to our understanding of cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology. He was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for identifying the fundamental role that nitric oxide (NO) plays in the regulation of cardiovascular function. Dr. Furchgott was the first to discover that the cells lining blood vessels produce a substance that induces vascular relaxation. He subsequently proposed that this novel endothelial-derived relaxing factor is nitric oxide. Dr. Furchgott’s discoveries have helped scientists understand and find new treatments for cardiovascular diseases and a host of other conditions ranging from immune disorders to memory loss, pulmonary disease, and erectile dysfunction.
