Impacts of social media
AbstractI am a Digital Media Production major and a Communication Studies minor here at SUNY New Paltz, so seeing this shift in media usage during the pandemic has been interesting to witness and be a part of myself. This is why, in my zine, I focused on how the pandemic has changed the way we utilize the internet and social media to stay connected with friends and family while social distancing, to try to maintain some sense of normalcy during the quarantine. Through my zine, I used statistics found from ‘The New York Times’ and explained how these statistics mirrored what was happening in my life with my friends and family as we stayed connected using the media platforms researched by SimilarWeb and Apptopia. This zine shows how valuable social media can be, and that it is more than just a means to procrastinate. Social media provides a way to keep in contact with others when it is not safe, and it is a way to spread and receive important news on the pandemic and news from abroad. This zine was created in Huntington, New York as part of a course assignment in "The Impacts of TV and Digital Culture," a Digital Media and Journalism course taught at SUNY New Paltz by Assistant Professor Jessica Crowell.
