Abstract
In an interview recorded May 7, 1982, education journalist Fred Hechinger explains his rationale for accepting a job offer from the New York Times in 1959, despite having turned them down two times prior. Hechinger describes his strategies for writing as a news reporter, including the importance of developing a network of experts to turn to in the fields you are less confident in writing about, to help determine what is important within the given field and how to present it to the general public.
