    Abstract
This c1870 charcoal drawing is the best image known of Mary Mortimer, whom Mortimer Hall is named for. She was a pioneer in higher education for women, teaching here in the early days of the school, the 1840s, when we were the Brockport Collegiate Institute. After leaving Brockport to recover from health issues, she made a connection with Catherine Beecher, and together they founded a school for women in Milwaukee.
