Abstract
The contemporary educational landscape is filled with multiple challenges, ranging from high-stakes testing to curriculum reforms. Never before have teachers been required to prepare students to meet so many local, state, and federal mandates. One change making arguably the greatest impact is the Common Core Learning Standards. To effectively implement these standards into the various content areas, teachers must first be able to define content area literacy. This research examines definitions of content area literacy from secondary content area teachers across the nation. During the presentation, session attendees will receive an analysis of the data collected and will explore its impact on classroom instruction. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the implications of the research conducted on classroom dynamics.
