    Abstract
Arriving into the island where isolation has preserved generations of embodied traditions, time stood still yet fluidly dialoguing with the Revolution of 1959. The line between history and present is blurred in the city of Matanzas on the island of Cuba, which carries its name from the massacre of African slaves . This city is known for its dedication to remembrance and preservation, the reference as the “Athens of Cuba” refers to the remnants of old buildings that remain. The dancing bodies daily reconnect with the living history of the city from the vibrant improvisation of rumba, to the joyous celebrations of comparsas, and the reverence of the orishas. Matanzas dances presently and historically, but inevitable change and an uncertain future becomes present in Cuban dance and music.
