This presentation will focus on rapport building between students with developmental disabilities and school staff members. It will begin with a summarization of general rapport building research, paying particular attention to building rapport with people with developmental disabilities. It will then describe a proposed study in which the interactions between students and staff members will be manipulated in order to create positive rapport. Working with children with special needs can be an extremely challenging task. In school settings, students with special needs frequently must work with a variety of different staff members. Often, the work that these students do is not only a function of their cognitive and physical abilities, but also depends on the relationship between those students and the staff members working with them. Therefore, it is important for staff members to be able to build positive rapport with their students. Creating a positive relationship between staff and students can lead to increased focus on and completion of tasks, decreased aggressive behavior, and a more positive experience for staff and students.
