The number of Hispanic immigrants is increasing and changing how school environments work in order to accommodate the needs of these students and their parents. Some parents choose bilingual education as a way to maintain their Latino heritage and values, while others don’t. According to Farruggio (2010) a number of factors will influence how Latino immigrant parents make this type of decision. This research paper explores the reasons some parents place value on their children learning their language and cultural values while others do not. It will also examine how the social context of local communities and parents’ experiences with bilingual education influence their attitudes toward heritage preservation. The information collected for this research paper is based on the experiences of Latino immigrants in two different school districts in the Rochester area. They will share their experiences and opinions through a survey. The results of this research paper have two implications. First, the parents’ responses and experiences will influence future immigrants in choosing a school program for their children. Second, schools can use this information to keep, create and improve bilingual programs in order to maintain the standards that these parents expect.
