This presentation explores the findings of evidence-based practice models that primarily focus on caregivers of individuals with aphasia and their effectiveness. The presenter is currently in a field placement at the Nazareth College Brain Injury Clinic, which serves individuals who are diagnosed with aphasia or other speech/language diagnoses. Through the facilitation of a caregiver support group, the presenter decided to conduct research into effective interventions for caregivers of individuals with aphasia. An evidence-based practice assignment written by the presenter in the fall of 2012 focused on the findings of interventions, assessment tools and other practice models that exhibited a reduction in caregiver burnout and stress. The presenter will speak about the importance of evidence-based practice in the social work discipline and how it is useful for future practitioners in an interdisciplinary health collaboration to understand the approaches by the numerous disciplines. Then the presentation will discuss the effects of an aphasia diagnosis on the family dynamic and how caregivers could be at risk for burnout and other physical and mental health issues. The presenter will provide the practice effectiveness question used in the assignment and then present the research findings. The conclusion of the presentation will reiterate the importance of implementing evidence-based interventions when working with a specific population and the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary collaboration in the health care field.
