    Abstract
    Professors Amy Guptill, PhD, and Andrea Ciliotta-Rubery, PhD, together with students, will reflect on their experiences with a 2015 summer field course entitled The Food System: Community and Politics. Students from the course will share their insights on how food-related policies empower and disempower community groups, while both students and faculty members will discuss what they have learned from the field course about personal empowerment and social connection through experiential learning.
    Description
    Andrea Ciliotta-Rubery, PhD, is a professor of political science at The College at Brockport with expertise in political theory and, in particular, the work of Machiavelli and its impact on Christianity. She regularly teaches a course on the Politics and Food (PLS 336) and co-taught the 2015 summer field course entitled “The Food System: Community and Politics”. Amy Guptill, PhD, is an associate professor of Sociology at The College at Brockport with expertise in the sociology of agriculture and food systems. She regularly teaches a course on the Sociology of Food (SOC 326) and has coauthored a textbook entitled Food & Society: Principles and Paradoxes (2012, Polity). She co-taught the summer 2015 field course entitled “The Food System: Community and Politics”.
