In this presentation, participants will engage in an icebreaker activity followed by slides, Q&A, and a group brainstorm to discuss LGBTQ+ identities, terminology, and phrases to avoid. The group will brainstorm on systematic “barriers” to positive LGBTQ+ Healthcare and discuss barriers to care, providing real-world case examples to support participant understanding. Participants will take part in a game-show style activity about LGBTQ+ Health Disparities and Statistics. Then, they will engage in another group brainstorm on “bridges” that can overcome the LGBTQ+ health barriers & disparities noted in the preceding 2 activities. The group will then have a discussion of actions, phrases, and skills that provide these “bridges.” If time allows, based on previous audience participation, a short video on “bridges” and “barriers” will be shown.

Cara Freeman, LGBTQ+ Community Health Specialist, Trillium Health Cara Freeman is a community health specialist on the LGBTQ+ Health Outreach team at Trillium Health. She has been working in the field of LGBTQ+ health for three years following her graduation from Nazareth College. While at Nazareth, she studied music therapy with a concentration in psychology. After beginning her career providing direct service support to LGBTQ+ community members, she transitioned into community education on health topics and cultural humility. The goal of Ms. Freeman’s educational programming is not memorization, but to creating environments where service providers are open to learning about the unique needs and challenges of LGBTQ+ populations.
