dc.description | Celia Watt, PhD, is Professor and Chair in the Department of Public Administration at The College at Brockport. She holds her doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University at Texas. As chair of the Department of Public Administration, she has instituted an MPA Speaker’s Series recruiting leaders in public, healthcare, and non-profit management. Most recently she launched the College’s Institute for Poverty Studies and Economic Development where she serves as director. She actively seeks opportunities to engage faculty, staff, and students in community initiatives. | |
dc.description.abstract | Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. But unless one has experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand. The poverty simulation bridges that gap from misconception to understanding. It is an interactive immersion experience that sensitizes participants to the realities of poverty. During the poverty simulation, participants will take on the identity of someone living in poverty. Participants will work together with a family to live a month in poverty.
Session Goals and Outcomes Participants will gain an increased awareness of poverty. Participants will examine their own behaviors while "living" in poverty. Participants will examine the challenges of living in poverty. Participants will discuss opportunities to impact poverty in their communities.
