    Building community through diversity from a global lens: What do we know about children from Chinese and Korean immigrant families and their education?

    Abstract
    The purposes of this presentation are (1) to investigate the demographic characteristics of Chinese and Korean immigrant families living in the Greater Rochester Area of New York, (2) to explore these families’ perspectives and needs for support concerning their children’s growth and development, (3) to discuss how the community can use the information on the students and their families to enhance the students’ learning experience via culturally responsive teaching approaches, and (4) to celebrate diversity, and value more about building a community through dialogue on diversity. Interactive questions and answers will be offered to facilitate a discussion on this topic. Session Goals and Outcomes Participants will learn about the demographic characteristics of Chinese and Korean immigrant families living in the Greater Rochester Area of New York. Participants will explore these families’ perspectives and needs for support concerning their children’s growth and development. Participants will discuss how the community can use the information on the students and their families to enhance the students’ learning experience via culturally responsive teaching approaches. Participants will celebrate diversity, and value more about building a community through dialogue on diversity.     Description
    Jie Zhang, PhD, is Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Education and Human Development at The College at Brockport. She also supervises student teachers and taught graduate thesis seminar. Her research interests are: exploring the cultural and linguistic factors in the services for children with diverse backgrounds/abilities and their families; and investigating the efficacy of different instructional methods on teaching and learning. It is the presenter’s passion to work with children with diverse backgrounds and their teachers and parents/families to enhance the quality of their lives.
