Abstract
Geospatial (mapping, drones, GPS, remote sensing) technology is a growing industry in Upstate New York State. To improve student access and success, an Open Geospatial Lab (OGL) will be developed with online peer to peer and faculty support via video chat. The Open Geospatial Lab (OGL) will expand (Geospatial Information Science Technology) GIST undergraduate student success, flexibility and retention in Monroe Community College’s and SUNY Cortland’s GIST Certificate and degree programs. Due to technology changes in software and communication, it is now possible to work completely remotely through the use of a virtual internship, mirroring the workplace (e.g., WeWork), and allowing for support of rural towns and organizations and cross cultural experiences in an increasingly global workforce. The program will also provide advanced GIST students with more opportunities for remote (virtual) GIST internships across Upstate New York as well as a pilot international remote internship in Cartagena, Colombia.
