Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis leads to chronic infections in small ruminants. This disease is infectious. Since the herd has been immunized, it has not been possible to use current blood tests to determine if a goat or sheep is infected. The goal of this research is to develop a DNA based test to determine if we can identify animals that are infected before symptoms appear and they become more infectious to the other members of the herd. As a positive control, a currently infected animal was euthanized and involved lymph nodes were collected. Total DNA was isolated and primers specific to C. pseudotuberculosis were employed during PCR reactions. Once our DNA test is successful on a known positive sample, we will then apply the test to swabs of oral or fecal origin as well as blood samples from known infected animals.
