dc.description.abstractThere is a large demand in today's world for physically assistive devices. Many people face difficulty in the form of physical ability when it comes to even simple movements of one's body. The purpose of this device is to assist one with the physical movement required by the simple daily activities of sitting down, standing up and walk. The design proposed is a modified walker that suits the needs of anyone who may need external help to get from the seated to standing position and vice versa. This is achieved through mechanical linkages and a portable power system (electrically powered). This device will act as a usual walker when the user is walking around with it, and when he/she is ready to sit, the device extends back and down, lowering him/her into any chair located in the rear section the device. When ready to get up, the device will then start to move back up while the user grasps the handles, safely lifting him up. The device uses a sling that is placed underneath the user to further help lift him/her up if his/her upper body strength is not sufficient. To safely achieve this task, it is designed in a way such that the user's center of gravity is always within the footprint of the device, thus allowing him/her to move up and down without tipping over. The developed device has combined features of most commercial patient transfer devices used in hospitals and the modern walkers. In addition to the regular lift and place action of the patient transfer devices, the proposed device performs the action of a walker with anti-fall feature. The user is lifted by a sling around his waist and under his thighs; the sling stays on while the user makes use of the device as a walker. Thus, loss of balance does not result in a complete fall. The user is held on the device and can recover the standing or sitting position using the electronic controls on the front. This might be crucial for old age people since minor falls can result in bone fractures or other serious injuries. The device is made portable by employing lateral collapsibility. Also, no fasteners have been employed to join the frame together. Principles of Design For Manufacturing and Assembly are used to design the device. The device employs only cotters pins at joints; this gives a fast assembly and dis-assembly feature for long travels. Standard pipe sizes are used to keep production cost low. The device is intended to be used by individuals who cannot stand up or sit down by them-selves and need support while walking. It gives complete independence to the user since it does not need any external assistance.en_US
