"Intersectionality in Justice and Equity"

Brockport's 17th Annual Diversity Conference

Thursday, October 5, 2017

The Diversity Conference seeks to promote open-mindedness, celebrate diversity, and promote awareness of divergent views on our college campuses and within our communities. The conference also serves as a forum in which to establish or enhance self-awareness in relation to community building endeavors.

Cultivating diverse communities and inclusive excellence is dependent on the existence of a just and equitable environment in which every member can thrive. This year’s theme, “Intersectionality in Justice and Equity,” will highlight justice and equity as they relate to economic, social, legal, political, educational and experiential inequities, and justice struggles. We’ll explore the intersections, convergences, and alliances between systems, groups, identities, or approaches to better understand and act upon this issue of diversity.

    2019 Brockport's 19th Annual Diversity Conference
    (2019-10-17)
This year’s theme, “Creating and Sustaining an Inclusive Community,” emphasizes the actions of Respect, Compassion and Open-mindedness to create a stronger and more positive learning, working and living environment for all Brockport students, faculty, staff (including Rochester Downtown Campus, REOC, Visual Studies Workshop campuses) and the community. We will explore important values that help us build and nurture our community through dialogue that addresses the challenges that face our society, as well as our growth in understanding and acting upon issues of diversity and inclusive excellence. Our goal is to encourage a positive climate on campus, within the community and the world through teaching, inspiring and helping others. Additionally, in partnership with the Academic Planning Seminar Summer Reading Program, this year's keynote address will be given by Francisco Cantú — writer, translator, and the author of The Line Becomes a River, winner of the 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in nonfiction. Cantú was as an agent for the United States Border Patrol from 2008 to 2012, working in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. A former Fulbright fellow, he has been the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Award, and an Art for Justice Fellowship. His writing and translations have been featured in The New Yorker, Best American Essays, Harper’s, and Guernica, as well as on This American Life. A lifelong resident of the Southwest, he now lives in Tucson, where he coordinates the Field Studies in Writing Program at the University of Arizona.

From Marginalization to Empowerment: Factors that Promote Psychological Growth in Individuals with Stigmatized Identities
(2015-10-08) Ratcliff, Jennifer; Bonafede, Erin; Tombari, Jamie M.; The College at Brockport
Much research has examined the negative consequences of trauma, but a growing body of research has examined posttraumatic growth (PTG), or positive psychological changes, that may occur as a result of trauma. This session will focus on stressors and traumas encountered by marginalized individuals, such as “coming out” and bullying experiences, and how such experiences contribute to PTG. Specifically, research will be presented that examines: 1) the impact of “coming out” as LGBT on PTG; 2) the role of bullying in PTG among LGBT adults and children with visual impairments; and 3) “best practices” to promote growth and foster inclusion.

Exploring the Epidemic of Homelessness in Higher Education
(2015-10-08) Aponte, Carmen; Snyder, Tricia; The College at Brockport
This session will discuss the topic of students experiencing homelessness. This topic has received limited attention despite these hard economic times that include rising tuition rates, requirements for higher degrees to secure employment and a lack of transitional support upon graduation. It is imperative that we take a closer look at the factors that are causing this prevalent issue to sweep our nation. The presentation will include a closer look at the College’s undergraduate students who self-identified as homeless in the Campus Climate Study (November 2013). Our aim is to increase awareness of college students’ homelessness through data and personal experiences, provide a model for addressing the needs of these students, as well as strategies for the College to identify these students before they drop out of higher education.

Clarity, Movement, and Citizenship: A Reading of Mari Evans’ Poetic Activism
(2015-10-08) Tait, Althea; The College at Brockport
In the last year, Americans have reconsidered the concept of citizenship in the public forum in response to the political unrest regarding racial oppression burning through our nation. In particular, the discourse has probed the definition of citizen, as well as, the concept of who is considered a citizen in our nation and, as a consequence, who is conferred with full benefits of being a citizen. Using this discourse and the body of poetic activism authored by Mari Evans, I will argue citizenship is a praxis involving clarity and action.
