This collection contains reports of survey analysis done by the SUNY Learning Network on faculty and student satisfaction with their online learning experiences. The SLN has been conducting these surveys and analysis since 1999. These reports represent some of the most comprehensive analysis of faculty and student satisfaction with online learning available.

    SUNY Learning Network and Coursespace Student Survey Fall 2006

    The following report contains frequency and percentages representing responses collected from the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) - CourseSpace Student Online Survey for the fall semester of 2006. The survey sought to obtain general information regarding students’ online or web-enhanced experiences. The survey consisted of 50 quantifiable items and 9 open narrative items. An analysis of narrative responses (i.e., open responses), is not included within this preliminary report. Between December 14, 2006 and February 15, 2007, 6551 questionnaires were electronically collected. Several surveys were submitted with partially missing data pertaining to specific questions. These surveys were included in the final sample of 6551 and were analyzed in this report. Files containing partial data account for the changing sample size represented in frequency tables 1, 2, 4 and 8-10. Here the notation of ‘Missing Data’ – refers to surveys collected in which no answers were provided for the specific question. In additional to responses not given, several survey items used the branching procedure described in the faculty survey summary. In these items, the survey was constructed to allow students to skip questions that were not relevant to their learning experiences. Survey items 12a, 13 -17, and narrative items 15, and 29-34 were branched according to each student’s response to item 12, which asked: Was this course offered via SLN or was it a classroom-based course utilizing CourseSpace online enhancements? Students who replied: SLN - were routed to items 13-17 and narrative questions 29 – 30. While students who replied: CourseSpace were routed to item: 12a. Was this a blended/hybrid course? Those who replied ‘Yes or I choose not to answer this question,’ were routed directly to items 18-28 and upon reaching the end of the survey to the narrative questions 31-32. CourseSpace students who replied ‘No’ to item 12a were routed directly items 18-28 and the narrative questions 33-34. All students were asked to complete items 35 and 36. Thus, students were routed to or away from certain items and were not given the opportunity to answer all survey questions. Notations are provided in frequency tables 12a, and 13-17 explaining the missing data counts due to programmed branching. The student survey was also created using the commercial software package licensed by WebSurveyor Corporation. Participants consisted of students currently registered in the SUNY system either as a fulltime or part-time undergraduates and graduates or as non-matriculated students enrolled in online courses via SLN or CourseSpace during the fall academic term of 2006. The students received a broadcast email asking each to complete and submit an online survey for each online / web-enhanced course they were taking. The analysis of survey responses were conducted using SPSS 15.0 software.

    The following report contains frequency and percentages representing information collected from the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) – CourseSpace Faculty Online Survey for fall semester 2006. The survey sought to obtain general information regarding online or web-enhanced faculty’s experiences developing, managing, teaching and assessing their fall courses. The survey consisted of quantifiable items and 5 open narrative items. An analysis of narrative questions (i.e., open responses), are not included within this preliminary report. Between December 14, 2006 and February 15, 2007, 261 questionnaires were electronically collected. Several surveys were submitted with partially missing data regarding specific questions. These surveys were included in the final sample of 261 and were analyzed in this report. Files containing partial data account for the changing sample size represented in frequency tables: 6, 14 & 14a. Please note that surveys containing partial data files (i.e., incidences that indicated no answer was provided), are categorized in all frequency tables as ‘Missing – Not Answered.’ Special consideration is relevant for survey items 14 and 14a due to the nature of the condition causing the noticeable elevated rates of Missing data. In these items, the survey was constructed using a branching technique that allowed us to direct respondents to specific survey items based upon each respondent’s previous reply. In this particular case respondents were directed to either survey item 14 or 14a depending on the reply given to survey item 5, which asked: Did you teach this course in a completely online format? Faculty who replied: Yes - were treated as SLN faculty and were routed to: - Item 14: If you have ever taught this course in the classroom, how would you compare your current online students' performance to the performance of your previous classroom students? While faculty who replied: No – were treated as CourseSpace faculty and sent to: - Item 14a: If you previously taught this course without using webenhancements how would you compare the performance of your current students to the performance of your previous students (i.e.in the version of the course without web-enhancements)? Thus, respondents routed to item 14 and were not given the opportunity to answer item 14a and vice-versa. The faculty survey was created and collected online using the commercial software package licensed by WebSurveyor Corporation. Participants consisted of SUNY system faculty teaching online courses via SLN or CourseSpace during the fall academic term of 2006. These faculty members received broadcast emails asking each to complete and submit an online survey for each online / web-enhanced course they were teaching. The analysis of survey responses were conducted using SPSS 15.0 software.

    SUNY Learning Network and Coursespace Student Survey Spring 2006

    The following report contains information collected from the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) - CourseSpace Students Online Survey for Spring semester 2006. As of June 14, 2006; 7760 questionnaires were electronically collected. The data included 2534 blank questionnaires. These blank questionnaires were deleted from the initial sample if the entire questionnaire was blank and contained no completed items. Survey returns that were partially completed where included in the final sample of ##. The remaining ## responses were analyzed in the report. The student survey was created and collected online using the SurveySolutions Express Software by Perseus Development Corporation. Students enrolled in online courses via SLN or CourseSpace during the Fall Academic Semester were asked to complete and submit an online survey form for each course they were taking. The analysis of data was conducted using SPSS software and Microsoft Excel.

    The following report contains information collected from the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) - CourseSpace Faculty Online Survey for spring semester 2006. As of June 20th, 2006, 510 questionnaires were electronically collected. This data included 92 blank questionnaires which contained only submission date data. These blank questionnaires were deleted from the initial sample if the entire questionnaire was blank and contained no completed items. Survey returns that were partially completed where included in the final sample of 418 and were analyzed in this report. Files containing partial data account for the changing sample size represented in several frequency tables that follow. Please note that for item where partial data files did not provide an answer are categorized in all frequency tables as ‘Missing – Not Answered.’ Possible explanations for partial data file may be that respondents abruptly ended the survey before completing all items. The student survey was created and collected online using the SurveySolutions Express Software by Perseus Development Corporation. Faculty teaching online courses via SLN or CourseSpace during the Spring Academic Semester of 2006 were asked to complete and submit an online survey form. The analysis of data was conducted using SPSS software and Microsoft Excel
