By Michaela Thompson People all around the United States are in dire need of blood. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs it. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. According to the American Red Cross, “approximately 36.000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S. Almost 7.000 units of platelets and 10.000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S. Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 units. The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O because it’s such a rare blood type.” “Sickle cell disease affects 90,000 to 100,000 people in the U.S. About 1.000 babies are born with the disease each year. A time to be thankful for everyone, and everything, that is in your life. You may be thankful for your family, a roof over your head, or being able to have food on your plate. This year let's make the earth thankful for our actions we may take this joyous holiday by being more sustainable! You know those fancy plates you have in your cabinet that you may never use due to the convenience of just using a paper one? Well, for Thanksgiving this year, use your reusable plates! Yes, you will have to wash the dishes, and yes, we all hate doing so, but if you think about it, you can hold more food on them too without the plate getting all gross. Along with this, you will be decreasing the amount of waste that would be produced! It is said that the average American household produces up to 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year! Speaking of producing less waste, let's talk about food waste. After we are done eating our dinners, it's often time for people to either talk for a bit and then leave, or just leave. A lot of leftover Thanksgiving food is wasted every year, most often because people don’t know what to do with it. Some people will even just throw the remaining amounts of food away because they don’t know where to put the extra food and what they will do with it after they store it. Well, there are many things your can do with your leftovers, such as turning those leftovers into a new meal. There are plenty of recipes on the internet such as casseroles you can make out of your leftover food! Another way to be less wasteful is to just keep those foods in general. Have you ever eaten cold leftover turkey straight from the fridge? It’s cold, but it still holds some sort of homey feeling to it in the days after Thanksgiving. Make sure that you store these foods in reusable containers like Tupperware so that you aren’t creating any waste from things such as plastic bags. Using a gallon sized bag to hold all your leftovers may be efficient, but using Tupperware is reusable so you can use it for the entire year! You know those paper decorations you can buy in the store that you use once and then throw away because they no longer have any purpose? Well this year, try to make your own decorations! Go outside and grab some pine cones (make sure you clean them of course)! Make your own centerpiece with some produce that you can eat later! Put both of these to- gether! If you just look up “DIY thanksgiving decorations” on the internet, thousands of decorations will come up! And what is even better is that you can use them for many years after that if you store them nicely! By making your own decor and being able to use it later, you are reducing the amount of waste you may produce over the holidays. This year let’s try to reduce our waste increase percentage for the holidays and improve our planet's health. The earth is our only home, and we only have one shot at helping it get better. There are many ways that you yourself can help reduce waste on the planet and often if one person |3acje 3 Columns J^obember 19, 2010 Turkey/Chicken? Day is seen making the decision to make actions to help the planet, others will follow behind. And if you’re feeling adventurous this thanksgiving, maybe try to convince one of your family members to try to become sustainable. Even the smallest action can help our planet! By History Club The chicken reached Mesopotamia 2,000 years ago. There are 3,700 year old clay tablets that discuss bread infused recipes that accompanied poultry. Stuffing, or dressing, is a seasonal staple. It is one of my favorites. The History Club recently had a roundtable discussing Thanksgiving food. The origins of the event are justifiably criticized. While we despise the folklore of the holi- day, we love the food. The day for me is Pavlovian. There are no meals, just a culinary consumption continuum. Personally 1 think of home baked breads, pies, squash, and cranberry sauce. My favorite is the late night sandwich. Dark meat, homemade bread. Hell-man’s... whew!!! G-man has green bean casserole. The pre-meal features Club crackers and homemade Chex Mix. His dad has a special recipe. The main meal is pretty standard. Monkey bread has recently entered the day. Jonah’s family has com on the cob, stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes. They also enjoy apple pie and sweet potatoes in a dessert style. It is topped with marshmallows and roasted. Ishani has a Fusion meal. They dabble in American fair but feature Indian food. Her family does chicken; they haven’t had luck with turkey. Rice is standard. They try different grains during the holiday, too. There is a buttery com and a spicy com (chaat masala). They roast fennel, asparagus, Brussels sprouts. Dessert is sooji halwa (Ghee, water, and a bunch of sugar) and a jello mold. The group left the discussion hungry and excited to see our families. As a historian the holiday is a confusing experience. Absent the alleged pretense; my memories are food, family and fondness. eg JWE: Return to Jurassic Park DLC; What We Know A beautiful shot of the Aviary. Players can have at least 3 Pteranodons in the enclosure at once, (credit: STEAM) By Jake Gross Frontier Developments dropped a bit of a bombshell on its paleo player base on Thursday November 14. It was rumored that we would be getting a new DLC at some point after the release of Claire’s Sanctuary that had to do with the original 1993 film, but we could not have fathomed the entirety of it. Return to Jurassic Park will introduce several new and completely unexpected aspects that will coincide with the free public update that will be released on the same day. The original main characters from the 1993 film; Doctors Alan Grant, Elbe Sattler and Tan Malcolm, will take center stage in this new storyline that will be placed shortly after the events of the film. What makes this an even greater piece of narrative is that Sam Neill and Laura Dem will be taking the reins to voice their characters along with Jeff Goldblum. This is huge news since it was announced back earlier this year that Neill and Cont. on page 4 IDagc 4 Columns! J^obcmbcf 19, 2019 JWE: Return to Jurassic Park DLC; What We Know cont. Dern would be returning to the big screen in the future untitled Jurassic World 3. To be able to have the chemistry of Grant, Sattler and Malcolm in a video game is something virtually unheard of. With the inclusion of the original trio, Return will be doing the same thing that Claire pulled off fantastically. And that is rewriting history. The DLC will be heavily story based while the player works their way through seven missions to salvage the operations on Isla Nublar and Sorna. This will technically create an alternate universe where the events of The Lost World: Jurassic Park and JP3 never happened or proceed in a completely different direction, much like Claire did for Fallen Kingdom. Return will also feature several new variants on buildings and dinosaur designs. The Ve-lociraptor, Tricera-tops, Stegosaurus The new version of Stegosaurus explores her enclosure with an aviary and new fencing behind her. (credit: STEAM) and Tyrannosaurus all have more movie accurate designs that pay homage to the original trilogy. The Rex and trike have been bulked up and no longer appear shrink wrapped. The raptors now have more interesting skin patterns and matching skull shapes, while the Stego doesn’t drag her tail on the ground anymore. The Hammond Creation Lab has a more JP based aesthetic to it, while we get a nineties version of the tour routes that visitors take for up close views of the dinos. There are also brand new buildings that we will have access to, two of which are complete surprises. We will now have access to the original Visitor Center as well as the infamous Raptor Paddock from where the original three raptors escaped. There’s a new heliport building which will be presumably the entry point to the parks. New fences also make an appearance. The first of the curve-balls relates to more intricate visi- tor management: toilets. This breathes so much new life and intricacies into a game where the only thing that is really alive are the dinosaurs. The visitors are simply a visual representation of a number that did nothing outside of walk around, take selfies and get eaten. The second confirmed new curveball is the Aviary, a giant steel dome that houses one of the things that Frontier stated that would probably never be included: pterosaurs. It wouldn’t be an Evolution update if we didn’t have brand new dinosaurs, and this case went above and beyond. Frontier in the past vehemently stated that we wouldn’t most likely get flying creatures due to the complexity of coding that kind of thing. But after working on their newest title Planet Zoo, they seem to have gotten a work around. The brand new Pteranodons will be housed inside the Aviary, where they can fly around a beautifully designed setting. While it is unknown precisely how this new mechanic will work, it will surely create a new side of the park. Most likely as a direct result of the success that the Homalcephalae had for the Herbivore Dinosaur Pack, Return will feature the smallest dinosaur in the canon, the Compsog-nathus. This palm size dinosaurs are most certainly going to create and need some special requirements. Over the next few weeks, Frontier will be revealing more detailed information on the free update and DLC. To find out more, keep an eye on their forums and Return to Jurassic accounts. Park will release on the tenth social media of December and be available on your preferred platform for $19.99. Looking at all of the skinny models on the posters in stores followed by being told that the store doesn’t carry shorts in my size feels...well, demeaning. Expressing myself through clothing has been my thing since I could pick out my own outfits, and now it seems harder than it should ever be to find cute clothes that also come in my size. I have been deemed by the fashion industry as “plus-size.” Although many stores and online shops have widened their range to fit a more diverse customer base, finding pants that fit comfortably over my booty is still a pain in the ass (pun intended.) If I’m being honest here, us “plus-size” girls aren’t the only ones with body image and clothing shopping issues. Body image affects everyone, of any gender or size. Some don’t like how skinny they are, because they get called “anorexic,” while many guys go to the gym just to fight off their impending “dad bod.” I’ll be candid in saying your body is no one else’s business but your own, and others can’t tell you if you should love it or not. So I tried to be that rebel. I tried to love my fat, thick body despite what others think. By no means is this a guide to loving your body. Everyone has their own struggles and journey. I decided a photoshoot would help me, so that’s exactly what I did. Rebecca Lewis from R.L. Studio Portraiture helped me achieve enlightened body positivity through glamour shots. The day-long process was hard work, constantly bending in awkward ways and smiling so hard that my cheeks were twitching by the end of it. However, it was all worth it. Throughout the day I felt super self -conscious, trying to hide my double chin and teeth by any means possible. Then I realized the point of this isn’t to hide what I don’t like, but to capture all of me. Coni, on page 6 Need To Earn Some Extra Cash? Sometimes even getting mixed up between the wrong chapters or classes. As you prepare for your finals, take the time to sort through and organize everything. This will make it a lot easier to find what you’re looking for during a study session. You should also organize yourself. Become familiar with what you know and don’t know for each class before designing a study plan. This way you’ll know which topics to spend more time on. As you do this, figure out the date, day, and time of your final and mark it in your calendar. Set reminders for it to ensure you don’t miss it, and double check with your professor if you have to. Take Advantage of Resources If you have questions, need assistance, or want to go over something with someone else, visit your professors during their office hours or stop into the Learning Commons. You can also use STAR -NY, which is free online tutoring for CCC students. To learn more information and access the link for STAR-NY, just login to your MyCCC, click the “Student” tab, and under the Student Services list to left of the webpage, go to the Learning Commons. Review Old Quizzes and Exams Sometimes questions from previous quizzes and exams taken in the term will appear on the final. The questions may be worded or asked differently, but by re- viewing old exams, you can familiarize yourself with the material and recognize what is right or wrong. Make Time in Your Schedule for Revising Set a time in your day that’s reserved strictly for studying if you haven’t already. Treat this block of time the same way you would a class or work shift. Utilize Apps Our phones are always by our side; in our hands, in our pockets, in our backpacks. And as your phone sits beside your laptop and a pile of books, it will tempt you. But you don’t have to fear this little device that holds the world. Instead, utilize it. There are many apps that you can download to help in preparation for your finals, or to assist with school in general. Forest - This app is a timer that allows users to stay focused by growing plants. If you try to exit the application, the cute little tree you’re trying to grow will die. You can still, however, play music from other apps like Spotify and Apple Music in the background. Another cool feature of Forest is that they’re partnered with Trees for the Future and plant real trees around the world. Quizlet - With Quizlet, you can memorize and understand information through flashcards, lists, games, practice quizzes, and more. Blackboard -Access content your professors put onto Blackboard and check your grades on your mobile devices using this. Google Keep Notes - Create to-do-lists and study plans, and after completing items, check them off to feel that sense of satisfaction and productivity. Scrap paper can be used as a brain dump. It can help you jot down ideas and outline paragraphs if your final includes an essay. It can also be used to jot down all the formulas you remember before going through the questions in the test. However you use it, there’s no denying that scrap paper can sometimes be a life-saver during finals week. 03 (Kaitlyn Klaiber/The Crier) By Tamara Price There has never been a better time for businesses to launch sustainable offerings. With a growth in environmental awareness and worry about how our planet will hold up in the future, businesses are beginning to hop onto this trend to satisfy the earth-friendly buyer. Conscious consumerism is today’s term to cover individuals who invest their dollars in companies that cater to a host of progressive values; workers’ rights, animal rights, low carbon footprint, recycled and/ or renewable materials, organic, local, etc. This is forming a competition amongst corporations about who will provide products that appeal to the large population who practice, or those converting to, a more conscious way of consumerism. As consumers, numerous products such as metal straws, reusable water bottles, biodegradable cutlery, and reusable shopping bags have become a new norm. Young climate activist Greta Thunberg was a trending topic on multiple social media platforms earlier this year, creating a large conversation about climate change. The signals for change have always been evident; plant more trees, reduce, reuse, and recycle. But a widespread change in attitudes, practices, and policies is beginning to take place, changing the way big corporations behave and the overall attitudes of humans when it comes to making more eco-friendly choices. Numerous large scale corporations such as Wegmans, Coca-Cola, Nike, and Starbucks have been taking action to practice a more sustainable method in response to the growing conversation and trend. Corporate responsibility varies widely amongst each. Wegmans has cut out plastic bag usage, Nike is now pushing to use more recycled materials, Coca-Cola now pro- lllustration by Elliot Houghtelling vides transparent practices and a recent report says the company will be working to convert to recycled materials, and Starbucks is now converting to renewable energy to power their stores. One thing seems clear, and that is consumers are using their spending power to affect the change they want to see. Organized consumer initiatives that are on the rise to serve the goal of sustainability are punishing corporations for doing the “wrong thing’ ’ and rewarding those doing the “right thing.” Fast fashion, animal testing, and human rights have been common issues that have fueled the fire for a widespread of targeted boycotts. Cont. on page 8 flags 8 ShttlJctit SntcrcStS dflobEmlJEr 19, 2019 Trend: Shopping as a Movement cont. Boycotting is a relatively new tool of consumer activism, and it’s gaining in stature, proving a point that eco-minded customers support a business if they fix the said issue. This increases revenue. According to a Nielson report, “Brands that are able to strategically connect (sustainability) to actual behavior are in a good place to capitalize on increased consumer expectation and demand.” This means customers want products that come from fair labor practices and have low environmental impact. With the issues of environmental awareness and climate change growing, Gen-Z and millennials have found common ground upon the issue, creating a generational intersection of environmentally-conscious purchases and lifestyles. One lifestyle that has become increasingly popular is zero to no waste. Behind this, brands such as Lush, ZAO Organic Makeup, and BITE all provide products that are reusable and create little to no garbage. A lifestyle that may seem difficult, maybe almost impossible in today’s world, is made increasingly easier through the emergence of companies making products that cater to those who live zero to no waste. The food industry is also being touched by this new sustainable attitude amongst consumers. 2019 is being labeled “the year of the vegan’ ’ as many people are converting to veganism, which was originally considered a minority within a minority. According to one survey done in 2015, 3.4% of the population were vegetarian and just 0.4% were vegan in America. The number of vegans in 2019 has now increased to 25%! The market for vegan food has also increased. In America during 2018, it rose ten times faster than food sales as a whole. Vegan farms are also making meat substitutes that are more similar replicas of meat. If plant-based “meats” begin taking off as well as they have, there may be a reduction in animal husbandry. This is a large concern for many animal rights activists. Sage Hugo, a 21 year old vegan, believes that the growing number of vegans is due to a domino effect. As more people are educated about the meat industries' practices, more people are turning away from meat products. “One person can definitely make a difference. If that one person shares information and convinces even one other person, it starts a ripple effect. That is how a movement begins. They’re slow at first, but can eventually gain traction. Which is what is happening right now with vegan- ism beginning to go more mainstream with the increased demand for vegan products. This ultimately will lead to less animals being bred into existence just to be murdered,” Hugo says. Many groups, small and large, are taking action to promote sustainability and fair employment practices. This is generating pressure on our government to fix this problem before it is too late. Greta Thunberg, a young climate activist who is going after world leaders, delivered hard hitting speeches that mention how young people are being betrayed by the lack of action done to reverse climate change. Thunberg is one of many activists with this claim. Not all activists become trending topics on Twitter and acquire 2.2 million views on Youtube. There are many smaller scale individuals speaking out. Max Rogers, a Coming Community College student who participated in the climate change protest on campus in September, also agrees that our government should be enacting more sustainable policies. “Electing officials to do the heavy lifting of policy making would enact a larger scale change,” Rogers says. Conscious consumerism is becoming a way that individuals can dictate the change they would like to see through their spending dollars. Consuming consciously is a way individuals can attempt to fix an on-going issue by supporting and living the change they want to see. The effect is more businesses pushing the use of more recycled materials, solar energy, fair labor practices, cruelty free products, and more. 03 |Jagc 9 ibtubent Siitm-StS i^obcmbcr 19, 2019 TURNTABLE You're Killin Me Ross: How a Highly Anticipated Album Became an Ignored Mess Houghtelling By Christian McGary What’s up, I’m Christian Xavier McGary, your host for this nonsense you’re about to read. Instead of talking about travel, I’m here to get angry about rap music (which I love btw so don’t get mad at me just yet) as well as talk trash about famous people. Just kidding (mostly,) this is a critique article, where I review a rap album that caught my eye as well as talk about things going on in the rap game/ industry, from beef to drama, relationships to clothing lines, an overall shadiness. I made this article because I want to share my opinion to people who actually understand rap music, not just listen to it, and that’s kind of hard to find around where I live (also because I’m running out of places I’ve travelled to). I also want to make people laugh, so remember that when you see my insulting your favorite rapper. I hope you enjoy, and if you get mad at me make sure to email me so I can be sure make fun of you on my next article. Rick Ross used to be my favorite rapper when I was younger, I honestly used to think that he was the best rapper of all time. I even made artwork of him in hopes of him noticing (as you can see below,) but instead of him noticing it was some random rich dude that had a picture of him and Rozay together at some bar (true story he liked all of my pictures on in-sta too). Like many others, I was super excited for his new album to come out, “Port of Miami 2.” For those who don’t know, the album that put the rap kingpin on the map in the first place was “Port of Miami.” It introduced us to who Rick Ross was, a smooth-talking, classy, drug dealing, gangsta boss who wanted the finer things in life, and he made sure he got them. With his high energy and booming vocals, mixed with his rap flow that could change from smooth and buttery, to choppy and intense in a second, people to this day compare listening to his music to driving in the most luxurious car money could buy while drinking champagne with names you can’t even pronounce. So why is this new album such a failure? The answer to that is simple, seven words actually; he raps about the same freakin’ things! It’s almost like he doesn’t realize he's a famous rapper! Let me put this into perspective for those unfamiliar with his work. Rick Ross raps about eight things; mon- ey, sex, drugs, family, luxury, poverty, love, and God. From the always seductive “Maybach Music” I-VI, where he’ll get a guest like John Legend or Kanye West and will sing about how Ross can give you a life you’ve always dreamed of (if you’re his woman of course,) to songs like “Born to Kill” or “Phone Tap” where Ross with sorely rap about the things he’s been through from poverty to being hunted down by either his enemies or the police, or even songs like “Ten Jesus Pieces” and “Powers that Be” where Ross will reflect on how he asks God for forgiveness and help, not only for him but to people close to him. Now here’s the thing, these songs sound pretty different right? I even said before that Ross changes up his flow pretty often, so what’s the problem? The problem is that this whole new album is just recycled. Every single one of his songs in “Port of Miami 2” is something you’ve already heard in his earlier albums, there is nothing new, literally nothing. For example, the song, “Gold Roses” he did with Drake, came out with another song called “Money in the Grave” by Drake, featuring Rick Ross. The problem here is that one; while they sound different, eventually that end up sounding like the exact same song, and two; “Gold Roses came out a while before the album, a whole month to be exact, the song came out in July 2019, and the album came out in August 2019. Now I know what you’re thinking, singers of every genre do this all the time, well yeah but that doesn’t mean it’s a good practice. Oh wow, I get to listen to the same mediocre song I was listening to a month ago while it was being overplayed on the radio. Not to mention that is literally the most boring rapper of all time, but y'all not ready for that Cont. on page 10 iPaQc 10 i?tiibcnt interests jOabeintier 19, 2019 Doctor Sleep: Snooze Fest or Slam Dunk? TURNTABLE cont. conversation. It doesn’t end there, the 6,h edition of the “Maybach Music” series is stale, following the same pattern as stated above, love and luxury, luxury, and more luxury. “Bogus Charms” is another somber piece about how the drug fame can ruin you and give you a meaningless death. Wanna hear a funny fact? Ross has an ENTIRE ALBUM with songs like “Bogus Charms”, go listen to his album “Black Market” and then come back, you’ll see what I mean. Take “Act a Fool” a song that goes back to his roots, endless flexing with a booming voice and crazy energy, and guess what? Listen to his album “Hood Billionaire,” literally an entire album with the exact same thing. (Christian McGary/The Crier) By GianCarlo Salce Nearly forty years after The Shining swept America by storm through introducing an iconic tide of terror, the long-awaited sequel has arrived: Doctor Sleep. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, we see young Danny Torrance as an adult in the present day and his struggle with real-world problems, like gainful employment and alcoholism. Of course, being a Stephen King story and all, posttraumatic stress and existentialism aren’t the only obstacles Danny must face. He finds new enemies in a cult known as the “True Knot,” a gang of immortals who hunt down those who can “shine” like Danny, one of them being a young girl named Abra. Abra is perhaps the most powerful user of her psychic gift the cult has ever seen, planting a large target on her. Quickly, Danny and Abra’s fates intertwine, as the two must survive being tracked by the biggest threat Danny has experienced since his formative years at the Overlook Hotel. Ewan McGregor stars as an adult Danny Torrance in this two hour, thirty -one minute film by Mike Flanagan. I remember when the book was first released m September, 2013. This is because I had my first time watching The Shining movie m the wintertime that followed. If perchance you caught my film recommendations for the Halloween season a few weeks ago, you would know I think highly of the film. As a refresher, I’ll state this: the film transcends cinema itself, it can simply only be known as art in motion picture form. Naturally, bemg a fan of literature as well as film, I sought to combme both hobbies and pick up the Doctor Sleep book. Not many years later, it was announced that a film adaptation would be made. Everything considered, there was essentially no reason for me to miss this release. Without spoiling, I feel it is fair to say, or perhaps warn even, that this movie does not follow the same tone or even film style as it’s predecessor. It is my understanding that many will go see this movie under the impression it will be just like The Shining. It is absolutely not so. This movie, for the most part, is like most other mainstream releases these days. The camera work is only slightly above -average, offering only a few creative and original shots. However, When those shots do happen, they are noticeable and refreshing to gaze upon, yet only occur a select number of times. Also like most blockbuster Illustration by Elliot Houghtelling |Jagc 11 ibtubent ^ittcccsftsf dBJoticmlici- 19, 2019 releases, I felt there was too much CGI being employed, which would not have been as much a problem in any other film. The excessive usage in this movie is something of an antithesis of The Shining, as almost everything in that movie was either practical or unnoticeable, which served to solidify it as a pioneer of cinematography. In the defense of the camerawork, I’11 say I thoroughly enjoyed some of the homage scenes that drew parallels between Danny and his father Jack, one of which in particular sticks out in my mind and is well deserving of praise. Being a book adaptation, the plot was quite tricky to adapt. For those that don’t know, director Mike Flanagan set out on a mission to make Doctor Sleep both an adaptation of the book’s source material and a sequel to the The Shining movie. However, Kubrick’s The Shining was not very faithful in the first place, changing many plot points and removing much of the deeper lore until all that remained was what was necessary to both entertain and terrify an audience. This led to much resentment from author Stephen King, who went on record multiple times to express his disdain for the film. Therefore, director Flanagan had to walk the line of essentially a paradox in crafting this film. Personally, I think the plot is solid and offers enough to satiate a casual audience but would cater better to those that read the book. Either way, if you read the book or not, the book’s ending was changed in the movie to offer a unique ending to say the least. Overall, I felt that the conception of this movie was unnecessary. By doubling down on the supernatural elements of what “shining” actually is as an ability and what it can do, it ruins the ambiguity of The Shining as a film. As aforementioned, The Shining is art, and warranted no sequel. There are so many questions and plot-threads introduced as one watches The Shining and they do not receive a whole lot of answers, allowing one’s perspective to be the key to what actually happened in the plot. The unfortunate, sad reality is probably that the big corporate studio heads felt like cashing in on a horror masterpiece and conveniently had a book to justify their motives. Recently, I also saw and reviewed The Lighthouse. I felt that, in terms of tone and plot depth, The Lighthouse was far more in-line with the themes of isolation, insanity, and the supernatural encounters that The Shining possesses. All I can say is this: if you are genuinely interested in how Danny’s story continues, this movie is for you. However, if you want to be thrilled the same way you were when seeing The Shining, this movie does not live up to expectations. By Noah Moore Post Malone is clearly a man who has his trust in short supply. Who can blame him? Since he rose to musical prominence in 2015 with his first hit, “White Iverson,” and musical dominance in the summer of 2018 with his triple platinum album, “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” the newfound fame has weighed on his psyche. Throughout these past few For those reasons, I rate this movie: 7/10. a years, Post has learned who to surround himself with, and that is blatantly apparent in his new album, “Hollywood’s Bleeding.” Artists who feature alongside him are: DaBaby, Future, Halsey, Meek Mill, Lil’ Baby, Ozzy Osbourne, Travis Scott, SZA, Swae Lee, and Young Thug. An overview of the notable songs is below. In the quiet song, Post reflects on the toxicity of the Hollywood culture, and how sometimes it feels like it sucks the life out of him. It is a very fitting song to be first, as it paints a picture of the album perfectly. “Saint-Tropez”: This song is a refreshingly upbeat one on the album. It also symbolically describes the hypocrisy of the Hollywood lifestyle, going from the first song which is essentially a complaint about living the famous life, to bragging about his fame and fortune. Saint-Tropez itself is a lovely city with a rich lifestyle and amazing beaches, and Post links the city to his wealth. This is Post’s best song on the album that doesn’t feature another artist. “A Thousand Bad Times”: This song is about Hollywood gold-diggers. It’s about those girls that are only self-serving, and only want a piece of Post. However, he’s used to this and essentially asks, “what’s one more time? It won't hurt anything.” Even though this is clearly selfdestructive behavior, he actually enjoys the, “game,” of dealing with these girls. Post’s talent at developing melodies is very evident in this song, and leads into the next song. “Circles”: When the song’s beat starts to kick in, Fleetwood Mac is the first thing that comes to mind. The instrumental backing track is a breath of fresh air to the album, and a song like this relies heavily on the lyrics, and Post shows off his talents as a lyricist. He is able to paint a picture of a relationship on the edge of falling apart or becoming stronger, because both partners are stubborn. He discusses “feeding the flame,” or making a situation worse. The use of the term, “let it go,” is an impressive touch, as he uses it to describe letting go of the relationship in one verse, and letting go of an issue for the sake of the relationship in another. “Die for Me (Feat. Future & Halsey)”: Post and Future talk about untrustworthy women in the first two verses, while complaining that they feel the brunt of the dishonesty. Future’s auto tuned voice can be annoying sometimes, but in this song, he shines through Halsey and Post. Speaking of Halsey, she is the first female singer on the album, but her voice is ironically the one that gets annoying, and she is only on the song for all of 40 seconds. She gives the female perspective of mistrust. “On the Road (feat. Meek Mill & Lil’ Baby)”: Easily the best song on the album, these three guys tackle three complaints that they have. Post raps about people who tried to jump on his bandwagon of success and now claim credit for his accomplishments. Meek Mill is the real show here, though, and his verse is essentially a continuation of the last song on his album, “Championships,” covering people who “leave when I lose and pop back up as soon as I win.” Lil’ Baby calls out immature people who drag him down. They all drop wisdom about their work ethic. “Take What You Want (feat Ozzy Osbourne & Travis Scott)”: This song’s lineup is amazing. Ozzy Osbourne’s trademark voice is really what makes this song great. He’s only responsible for singing the chorus twice, but the haunting remembrance of a girl who broke their hearts is really what the song needed. Travis Scott slides under the radar right into the second verse, and he brings what only Travis Scott can. Post’s verse discusses the emotional toll the relationship took on him, and Scott focuses on the physical toll, specifically substance abuse and promiscuity. “Internet”: After Post Malone’s plane crashed and several people went on twitter wishing for his death, he decided to include this song on the album, even though it was written in 2016. It is short, but it is the most impactful one on the album. It highlights the stupidity of people who live their lives vicariously online through social media. His voice hugs the melody very well, and the simplicity of the song highlights the important lyrics. “Goodbyes (feat. Young Thug)”: Post and Young Thug give differing viewpoints on relationships. Post wants to rid his life of a girl that is driving him crazy and driving him to drink. Young Thug wants to reconnect with a girl he is fighting with in a possessive way. The contrasting viewpoints make the song a good one, and Young Thug’s whiney voice actually lends itself to it. “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” has several other songs that are very good, iPagc 13 ibtubent ^ittcccsftsf i^obcmbcr 19, 2019 but those mentioned above are of particular interest. Mistrust of women and defiance of Hollywood are common themes in the album. It’s a significantly darker and more emotional album, and that comes through in the lyrics and the vocals. Additionally, it has 17 songs in total, and has a runtime of 51 minutes and 4 seconds. It is a very good body of work from Post Malone and will add to his domination of the charts and the music industry. Vianna Koegel Editor in Chief If asked to describe what the most impactful thing at CCC has been for me, I would say the Crier. I remember coming into college nervous about making friends and meeting new people, and having been told time and time again that joining clubs is the solution, I was prepared to do just that. I remember writing my name on that email list at Check Us Out, and I remember nervously walking into a room full of exactly two other students and our advisor. I remember all of us simultaneously wondering how we were going to revive a paper with three people, and I remember volunteering for Assistant Editor and being elected with obviously no opposition. I never would have thought that I would have a staff position in a club in my first semester, let alone in my first couple weeks of college. In the following months I learned so much. I learned the responsibility that comes along with leadership and the commitment that comes along with editing and writing for a publication. As we recruited more and more people through both semesters I felt what it was like to be part of a new kind of family. I was able to go to really cool events, and had the opportunity to interview amazing people. I met even more people and had unique new experiences (I never thought that I’d have a 60 year old tell me that they liked my nose piercing, but that happened at one event.) I was able to be a part of reformatting the newspaper to look more like an actual newspaper. As I took on the role of Editor in Chief at the end of last semester, I was both excited and nervous for what lay ahead. I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to keep the forward momentum that we had gathered over the last year. But, everything worked out even better than I had expected. I learned of the behind the scenes work that I hadn’t experienced much before: the logistics of planning meetings, obtaining and keeping peoples’ interest, making sure everything happens in a timely fashion, and overseeing everything. I now have hours upon hours of editing under my belt, which I have found to be both an extremely stressful and extremely fun process. Being able to put something together that contains such a variety of different voices is an experience I will never forget, and that I hope to do more someday. I think of the nearly 20 issues of the Crier that I have Cont. on page 14 |Jagc 14 ibtubent Siitm-StS dBbticmlicr 19, 2019 Goodbye From the Editors cont. been a part of, and I am so extremely proud of myself and the people who I’ve worked with to get to this point. We have specific positions now, we have an election process, we have a podcast, and we have a website. Having a podcast or website didn’t even seem like a goal we could achieve any time soon last year. As my time at CCC comes to a close, and as I edit this last issue, I am so lucky and grateful to have had the opportunity to work on something so important to me and to have spent time with such special, like minded people. To everyone, thank you for reading the Crier, thank you for contributing to it, thank you for supporting it and in turn for supporting me and the college as a whole. I happily leave the joy of working with the paper to those still at CCC and future students as well. 03 Kaitlyn Klaiber Assistant Editor To capture my experience with The Crier in just a few words is difficult. My experience feels more than 395 words. It's paragraphs and paragraphs of new beginnings, stories, and personal growth. To go back to the first page, there's the one where I joined the newspaper in January of 2019. It was one of those days where I remember what I was wearing, most likely because it was monumental without me realizing it at the time. I was nervous, scared, and excited. The Crier was the first club on campus I joined, and it would be my first time branching out to converse with students I didn't have classes with. But all of those nerves completely washed away after the first few meetings I attended, because the newspaper welcomes each writer and artist who enters with open arms. And to anyone reading this who has the slight- est thought about joining; I strongly recommend to do so. I started out as a Reporter, which was something new and unfamiliar to me. Before this, the only article I ever wrote was a new story assignment in my sixth grade English class. Under The Crier, I tried to write about any campus event I had the time to cover in my free time. From celebrating Setsubun with the Japanese Language and Culture Club to interviewing Dr. Katherine P. Douglas on two occasions, I went from being an inexperienced j our- nalist to one with a bit of experience. Now that my time with the Crier is coming to an unanticipated, end, I can proudly and sadly say that I'm leaving the experience as the Assistant Editor slash first Web Editor with a bit more experience. Being able to set up and design the first ever website for the newspaper is a highlight of my 2019. It's something I didn't imagine myself doing this semester, and there's so many great things to come with it. I'll miss updating the website with each issue that comes out, but now that we have it, I'll be sure to continue reading and supporting The Crier after I graduate at the end of this semester. I wish all the best to those carrying on with The Crier and their journeys at CCC, as well as the future writers and artists who walk through those doors to attend a club meeting. Signing off...
