Distinguished Alumni Information for 2005 Recipient Lawrence R. Johnston ‘70
Lawrence R. “Larry” Johnston received his A.S. degree in Liberal Arts from Corning Community College in 1970. Upon graduation Larry transferred to Stetson University, Deland, FL earning his B.A. degree in Business Administration.
Mr. Johnston’s professional career began in 1972 when he joined General Electric (GE) in the Appliance Division as a Sales Trainee. After spending several years in various positions including Retail and Contract Sales Manager, he moved to GE’s Appliance Park in Louisville, KY in 1979, holding marketing management positions in the builder, private label and international market segments. His remarkable career continued with GE serving as Merchandising Manager in the Washington, DC region and then as Regional Manager in Cleveland, OH. Mr. Johnston was later named General Manager of GE Appliances’ (GEA) Eastern Sales and Distribution Operations, followed by President of International General Electric Puerto Rico and finally as General Manager of Domestic Sales Operations. In 1989, he was named Vice President of Sales & Distribution for GE Appliances and elected a company officer by GE’s Board of Directors. In 1997 he was named President and CEO of GE Medical Systems, Europe in Paris, France with 4,000 associates and $1 billion in revenues across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Simultaneously Mr. Johnston also served as Chairman of GE’s European Executive Council, a forum comprised of all GE’s European business leaders. In 1999, he returned to the U.S. and was named President and CEO of GE Appliances, a $6 billion global business with 10,000 employees.
In April 2001, after 28 years with GE, Mr. Johnston was selected as Chairman of the Board, CEO and President of Albertsons. Albertsons, with headquarters in Boise, ID, is one of the largest food and drug retailers in the world with annual sales of $40 billion. This Fortune 50 Company, with annual revenues of $40 billion, employs a work force of more than 240,000 employees in 2,500 retail stores. Located in 38 states, Albertsons is the parent company for the grocery store chain of the same name as well as other leading banners including Acme, Jewel-Osco, Osco Drug, Sav-on Drags, Star Markets, Super Saver, Bristol Farms and Shaw’s. In addition to his responsibilities at Albertsons, Mr. Johnston serves as a board member for The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) in Washington, DC and CIES World Food Forum in Paris, France. Most recently he was named to the Board of Directors for The Home Depot in Atlanta, GA.
Mr. Johnston has two daughters, one son and four grandchildren and resides in Boise, ID.

The listing of graduates and degrees contained in this commencement program reflects information determined to be correct at the time of printing. It is not, however, the official list of degree candidates certified for graduation. The posting of the earned degrees on the permanent transcript filed in the office of the college registrar is the official testimony of possession of the degree.
ACADEMIC ATTIRE
The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning.
When Colleges came under secular control in the 1300's, particularly in England, a touch of color was added to the academic garb. Thus the gown for graduates of many English universities is of a scarlet color. With the founding of colleges in the American colonies, the tradition of the academic gown became established on this continent as well.
Academic hoods originally formed the cowl worn as a head covering by the monks. They could also be worn as a shoulder cape, or could be used as a bag for the collection of alms, or for carrying books. The outside of the hood is bordered with a velvet facing, the color of which indicates the subject studied for the degree granted. The color of the inner lining of the hood indicates the institution which has granted the degree. The length of the hood indicates the degree earned, the doctoral hood being the longest.
Today's candidates for associate degrees and certificates are wearing gowns similar in style to those worn by candidates for the bachelor degree. Their caps are worn with the tassels hanging on the right side until the degree is actually conferred whereupon the tassel is moved to the left side.
PHI THETA KAPPA
The gold stole and gold tassel signify membership in Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. Graduates wearing these symbols have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above.
PENNONS
A pennon became the symbol of achievement during the Middle Ages and, as such, the degree pennons used in today's ceremony symbolize the achievement of this College's graduates.
A long, narrow flag or streamer, triangular and pointed, the pennon was formerly attached to the head of a lance and was borne as a distinction by the knight. Upon the performance of any gallant action by a knight or his followers, the triangular point of the pennon was cut off, thereby converting it into a banner of distinction and achievement.
So it is that this ancient symbol marks the accomplishments of those who are being honored at this graduation ceremony. The five pennons represent the Certificate Programs and the four associate degrees offered at Corning Community College. Those who carry the pennons symbolize excellence in each area.
