While the work on each project is personal, there are many group activities as well. Our most recent adventure was a dinnerparty at Professor Hanak’s house. Everyone brought their favorite dish to pass. One "fowl" dish that got lots of laughs was Professor Vince Lisella’s "wild ass" ostrich chili (the meat comes from the hind quarter of the bird so you can understand where the name comes from!) One topic of conversation at the dinner was the National Collegiate Honors Council ( NCHC ) conference being held this spring. The conference brings together many Honors students in the northeast region from Maryland to Maine. This year the conference will be held in Philadelphia, PA. The Honors group at Coming Community College hopes to attend this event. The students in the forum are getting prepared for their upcoming mid - semester presentations. We would like to extend an invitation to everyone on campus who might be interested in learning more about the Honors Forum to please join us for these presentations which will begin on March 7th and continue on the 14th and finish up on the 21st. Students have chosen topics that interest them greatly, so we're sure the presentations will be exciting. So stop by C203 on Thursdays at 12:15 P.M. Your article "Call to Arms" was an articulate, well reasoned challenge to your generation to be accountable and take responsibility. The editor's comment, "This article does not reflect the opinion of The Crier..." "I have my own views of politicians." Brilliant, Mr. Editor, but how about a discussion of the issues? It will be interesting to see the opposing view and its well reasoned logic, not simply someone's opinion of poli-ticians. Mr. Editor, if you really spend so much time correcting spelling in letters to the paper, how is it The Crier went to print misspelling "curiosity"? An unrelated question... is it really true that the Christian publication, The Liberty Banner is really banned at the college library? Just curious? Anthony Delgrasso Mr. Delgrasso, First, this is what I would call a very constructive criticism and more of these are welcomed! Second, yes, Chip’s 'article' was very well done, but it is none the less, AN OPINION! It was put on the front page to try to get the student body more involved in the upcoming presidential election. His article does not represent the opinion of The Crier, nor does mine. I do have my own cynical opinion of politicians based on a lot of research and fact. Such as, Lamar Alexander, Republican presidential candidate, a man, who with his wife, turned an $8,600 stock investment into a $142,000 windfall because of impending legislation in Tennessee, where Mr. Alexander was serving as governor at the time. A short time later, they managed to turn another small investment into a $340,000 windfall. Shades of Hillary, I think. This is not an unusual pattern among politicians, Democrats or Republicans. The rarest animal in the beltway seems to be ideals. If you would like to do a little research of your own, then I suggest that you start in 1992 with all of the representatives and senators elected, party is irrelevant, and see how their voting patterns change. Find out what issues they were elected on and then how they voted on those issues. I think that you will be surprised at how easy it is for a politician to change his mind or lose his ideals. As for the spelling errors, there are some in every issue. This happens because of deadlines and a very limited staff. If you or anyone else would like to come down to the office and proofread, we would welcome you. Complaints only emphasize the point I was trying to make in the last issue. Actions speak louder than words. The Liberty Banner is not banned from the library. I had an interesting chat with Donald Vorhees, the college librarian, and his response was that he could nor remember anyone asking about this publication. He went on to show me a listing of a variety of religious periodicals that are there. "We would be happy to accept gift subscriptions or donations of periodicals," he said. Budget always comes into play. The periodicals that are kept are not as extensive as a four-year school would have. Mr. Delgrasso, I do thank you for your letter. It is very important. If you would like to write an article on the upcoming election or anything else, we would be happy to print it. The same goes for anyone else. But the AIDS Theatre Project actually puts a human face on the AIDS crisis. The Company is made up actors- men and women, black and white, young and old, gay and straight- who are HIV+ or have full blown AIDS. Together, they are living proof that people don't get AIDS and die, they have AIDS and live. Through their performance they help people understand what living with AIDS is all about. The AIDS Theatre Project offers a unique and personal bridge to an enlightened understanding of the AIDS crisis. The 40 minute play followed by a 40 minute question and answer period is for many members the first time they have the opportunity to see, meet and talk to people with AIDS. Audience members over and over have stated that after seeing the performance, they can never look at AIDS the same way. The theatre is here to try to make a difference. Come and watch March 5th! FI or fast relief from the nagging ache of taxes, we recommend TIAA-CREF SRAs. SRAs are tax-deferred annuities designed to help build additional assets—money that can help make the difference between living and living well after your working years are over. Contributions to your SRAs are deducted from your salary on a pretax basis. That lowers your current taxable income, so you start saving on federal and, in most cases, state and local income taxes right away. What's more, any earnings on your SRAs are also tax-deferred until you receive them as income. That can make a big difference in how painful your tax bill is every year. As the nation's largest retirement system, based on assets under management, we offer a wide range of allocation choices — from the TIAA Traditional Annuity, which guarantees principal and interest (backed by the company's claims paying ability), to TIAA-CREF’s diversified variable annuity accounts. Kate Baker -Co-Captain Bandy Whittaker Sarah Weigel Corning Men Shoot Down Elmira's Soaring Eagles with 84-69 Win Colette Bierwiler Memorial Scholarship —by Mark Barnes The Coming Men's basketball team advanced to a higher school of learning on Tuesday February, 13th taking to the road to face a division three four year school, The Soaring Eagles of Elmira College. In a game that was superbly played by Coming, Elmira was soundly defeated. From the start of the game at Elmira College's newly opened Speidel gym the Red Barons let it be known that they were not there to lose. Handling the ball well at both ends of the court seemed to be their main focus with total teamwork, legitimate rebounds, and accurate shots. The Red Barons led by a narrow margin of six points at the half 45-39. The second half seemingly capitalized on the first with a more finely tuned defensive approach by a Red Baron team which held Elmira's leading scorer Todd Blish to a minimal seven points in the second half. Their defensive attack must also be credited for structuring a well paved road for game high scorer Leslie Ross, who hit the boards for 25 points overall. Try as they might the Soaring Eagles could not overcome the pressure which Coming had showed up to pummel them with. While the final minutes ticked off the clock the lead seemed clearly unattainable, and defeat could be seen in the eyes of each Elmira player, as Coming slammed home an 84-69 win over the Soaring Eagles. Named MSAC Player of the Week -by Vince Beach Leslie Ross was named player of the week by the Mid-State Athletic Conference Service Bureau for the week ending February 19, 1996. Leslie averaged 34 points and 5 rebounds in the Red Barons' two wins during the week. On the road against Finger Lakes Community College, he scored 32 in the Red Barons' 70-60 victory. Jefferson had been previously unbeaten in Mid-State Conference play, and ranked #3 in the country in the NJCAA. Leslie Ross is the only conference player to be named player of the week twice. Congratulations to Leslie and the entire team for a superb effort and continued success in the regionals! —by Keith Nichols The Coming Community College Cheerleaders can us some help. They have certainly proved that they don’t need it, but they could certainly use it. These five young ladies have all season done a terrific job of supporting the teams that have played at home. A very tough job, indeed, but nevertheless, they have per servered and shown the college community what team spirit really is. If you would like to get involved with the cheerleaders, contact Ann Tiffany a) (607) 962-9210. You can also come out and support the different teams that this college proudly put forth every year and in the process get a terrific view of all that the cheerleaders do. There is nothing stupid about belonging to the cheerleaders. In fact, it looks extremely attractive on a resume. It shows the world that you can work as a team player as well as being able to enjoy life to it's fullest. It is also a great way to build solid friendships that will carry far beyond this school. Learning to be an intricate part of a complex team is certainly not for everyone, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving it a try to see if you might like it. You might be surprised at how much fun you are going to have. Please, if you have thought about it but been indecisive about when to ask someone or to come forward and say, "Let me try!", then now is a good a time as any. If you are transferring to a four-year college, then this is a definite plus. You will not regret it. The winners of the stuffed bears are: Big Bear - J.J. Gublo, Little Bear - Barb Bums. Law Society at CCC -by Danielle Farnbaugh CCC's Law Society is coming off an active six months as plans are made for the annual national celebration of Law Day on May 1. This year's featured speaker will be Captain Walter DeLapp, who led the New York State Police in the Eric Smith murder investigation. This year, a revitalized Law Society has participated in many professional growth experiences. The Law Society began this academic year by manning the Voter Registration booth in the lobby of the Commons. This annual community service project is coordinated by government professor, Pauline Leveen. Lee Ann Severs, of the Career Planning and Placement office, was invited to give a resume workshop which gave members of the Society a great springboard of putting together their professional folders. The Law Society also invited attorney David Rynders to come to a round-table discussion. Rynders, the former executive director of the Neigh- borhood Justice Project, recently began devoting his full-time energies to his private practice. He led a lively discussion encompassing such diverse topics as law office culture and manners, arbitration, career approaches, and alternatives to litigation. Now, the Law Society, which has approximately 20 members and is made up mainly of paralegal students, is making plans for many projects, including touring the Supreme Court Library of Chemung County, formulating a new Society constitution and exploration of the formation of a Paralegal Alumni Network, as well as preparing for the annual celebration of Law Day. Each year, the entire nation marks Law Day on May 1 as a commemoration and exploration of the importance of the legal field in U.S. society. The Law Society meets each Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Commons. Contact advisor Gregory L. Dalton at ext. 424 or Danielle Farnbaugh at 733-6260 for meeting information. AOS by Brian Shuster "OK, that’s close, but the word is Aaahhh, say it, Aaahhh." March 4, 1996 • The Crier • 15 ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS These three series of questions are designed to help you examine your attitudes about alcohol and other drugs and to help you privately assess how and why you use chemicals. There are no right and wrong answers. This questionnaire will help you focus on your behavior and attitudes; then you decide whether you need to change the way you use alcohol and other drugs. Answer the following questions honestly. No one else has to see this. You may discover some amazing things about yourself. Social attitudes and responsibilities Do you encourage or discourage use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs? You may want to discuss these questions with you friends and family. 1) When you have friends over do you immediately offer them an alcohol is beverage or other drugs? 2) When you have friends over do you offer them nonalcoholic beverages? 3) Do you assume that everyone wants to drink alcohol or use other drugs at a party? 4) Do you consider it "manly" or "cool" to be able to drink or use drugs a lot? 5) Do you drive a car while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs a lot? Do you ride with drivers who are under the influence? Do you try to prevent someone who is intoxicated (high) from driving? 6) Do you know the difference between a social drinker and an abusive drinker? If yes, what is the difference? 7) Is drinking or other drug use often the topic of conversation with your friends? 8) Is it important that your friends enjoy drinking or other drugs? 9) Do you and your friends frequently joke about getting drunk and high and doing crazy things ("Boy, I got so smashed last night I...")? 10) If you smoke, do you smoke in public places - especially crowded, poorly ventilated areas or where people are eating? Use of Legal Drugs 1) When you have a headache, do you immediately take a pill to get rid of the pain? 2) When you are nervous or upset, is your first response to "take something to get rid of that feeling? 3) When you seek medical help for a physical ailment, are you disappointed if the doctor doesn't give a prescription or some other medication? 4) Do you ever exaggerate a health problem to get a prescription painkiller or tranquilizer? 5) Do you think "take something” is the best maybe the only-way to cope with minor aches and pains? 6) Do you routinely take something to help you fall asleep? Or to help you stay awake? 7) How much coffee or tea do you drink a day? How many cola drinks containing caffeine do you drink a day? 8) Do you ever get nervous or edgy from drinking a lot of coffee/tea/cola? 9) Do you crave a cup of coffee or tea to wake up in the morning? Are you crabby about it? 10) Would you like to change your use of coffee, tea, or cola? 11) Do you use diet pills to help lose weight? 12) Do you smoke cigarettes? 13) Have you wanted or tried to stop smoking without success? 14) Does your group of friends share prescriptions or any other medicines that "work” for them? Use of Alcohol and Drugs 1) Do you use illegal drugs? 2) Do you ever think of drinking or using drugs when you should be thinking of something else? 3) Do you look forward to the end of the day or week so you can drink and use drugs? 4) Do you fell the need to take "something" at a particular time of the day? 5) Do you sometimes drink or use more drugs than others without showing too many effects outwardly? 6) Do you drink your first couple of drinks quickly or use drugs in a way to get the fastest high? 7) Do you drink or use drugs before going to a party to get a "head start"? 8) Do you have an extra drink while mixing drinks for others or take extra drugs when using with others? 9) Do you drink or get high by yourself? 10) Do you drink or get high to calm your nerves, forget your troubles, or reduce tension or stress? 11) Do you drink or get high when you are angry with other people? 12) Do you drink or use other drugs to build your self-confidence? 13) Do you find it difficult to enjoy a party without alcohol or drugs to use? If you answered "yes" to any question in this section, you might consider other ways to handle the same situations or to deal with the feelings that provoke use of these drugs. Many local health care agencies (hospitals, clinics, mental health centers, lung and cancer societies) can help you learn how to relax, improve your sleep habits, quit smoking, lose weight, or handle personal problems without drugs. Help is only a request away. It is never too late to try to change your life! 16 • The Crier • March 4, 1996 by I. R. Psychic AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18): As the month progresses, you will continue to debate whom to vote for in the upcoming election. You want someone who is honest and forthright, yet bold and unabashed about their feelings of patriotism. You want someone that has the country's future at heart yet doesn't forget the common person. Too bad, you are going to be disappointed to find that Abraham Lincoln is dead. PISCES (Feb. 19 - March 20): You are a person who has the courage to speak your mind. Tact and personal consideration never enter your mind. This will come full circle when strangers come up to you and ask, "Weren't you on the milk carton I opened this morning for breakfast?" ARIES (March 21 - April 19): Never one to shy away from a challenge, you are one who has always believed that there is nothing too tough, nothing so difficult that with perseverance, cannot be overcome. Obviously, you have never called your sex partner by the wrong name in the heat of passion. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): You have just had the worst week of your life, so you think. I hate to make your corn flakes soggy, but there are going to be a lot worse before you are done. Remember last night, at the bar, when you were so drunk, deservedly so after the week you had, talking to that person on the stool next to you and telling him what an A e your boss is.? Well, that was his brother. I told you that there would be worse times. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): When you come to terms with your inability to make a commitment, your life will improve oh so much! In order to do this, you will have to accept the fact that you are not lord and master of your home. You are not lord and master of anyone else. You are not in charge of anything important and you are definitely not in charge of your romantic relationship. You are definitely not going to come to terms with it. CANCER (June 21 - July 22): You would like to vote for Bob Dole for president, but you feel that his views on welfare and social security are too obtuse. You would like to vote for Bill Clinton but have a problem voting for a pathological liar. You would like to vote for Ross Perot but believe that this Simon-Bar-Sinister replicant is a megalomaniac. You could always write in Mickey Mouse, approximately 4,000 others do every four years. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22): Time to take time out for yourself. Time to enhance those inner vibrations of love and wonderment. Time to bring out the inner child so deep within you. Time to get some Ex-Lax. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22): Only Virgos are as irritating as fingernails on a black- board. Virgos are generally limited in their extra-curricular activity options. Oh well, you could always become an editor for a community college newspaper. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 22): March is not a good month for Libras. With you sixth moon in the house of Phaelon, you will not have a lot of choice about all of the crap you will have to deal with this month. My suggestion is to stay in bed until April 2, then you can always tell people that you ran out of Prozac. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21): You are going to change your major to Mathematics/ Science with a minor of Psychology/Sociology. You are also going to run for Senator, join the Student Judiciary, volunteer for three other clubs and work three jobs to support your family. After one semester of this, you will be searching for someone to unscramble what's left of your brains. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21): St. Patrick's day is coming up and we all know of the close association between Christmas, the day of the Irish and you. The Irish have Notre Dame and Notre Dame has Christmas and you got Notre Dame underwear for Christmas. The Irish have green things and so does Christmas and your underwear. St. Paddy's Day comes but once a year just like you and Christmas. I told you there was a lot in common. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan 19): This is a really strange month for Capricorns... or is it Capricornites?...or is it Capricorners?...or is it Capricans?...or is it Capricrats?...or is it Cap'n Crunchers? It doesn't really matter. People are going to call you by the pet names that they have come to know and love you by. Names like snookum berry or love muffin or clam cake or sugarplum or booperonio or by the name most of your acquaintances know you, just plain old worthless. Hate to bust your bubble.
