CCC corning community college State University of New York THE CRIER November 30th “The Voice of the CCC Student Body” Fall 2005 Let us know what you think: www.cee_cee_response@yahoo.com NEWS Lounge Well folks.. .now that the lounge is back in business, lets keep it open. Let us remember that we do not have maids that work for the college to clean up after us. With all do respect to each and every student attending here, lets not keep closing and then waiting to reopen the lounge. Let us all pitch in and help out by picking up after ourselves. By doing this, we won’t have our privileges taken away from us anymore. It is really that simple. We can all tend to get loud and sloppy at times, but we have to remember that there are other people that use the lounge too. Give due respect and you’ll get respect back. Thank you very much for your cooperation and let us show the student activity office wecan do this. No more closings. OPINION China Drops Population Control and Pushes for Urinal Splash Guard Regulations By Matt Roseler In today’s world, -especially in China it seems- a regulation for the installation of urinal splash guards is in order. These little devices provide the optimal amount of coverage for the prevention of what could be considered the most embarrassing thing next to turning on the hand-dryer while crapping. Urine back splash is a problem that most men encounter while relieving themselves, whether drunk or not in a public restroom facility. I know this first hand, through experience and through my friend Ben’s stories regarding frontal-parietal wet spots. It seems that in China that this problem is not only neglected, but it is also photographically documented. (Hence the push for U.S.G regulations) I would appreciate the opportunity to walk into any and all men’s room facilities (foreign or domestic),and have the luxury of urinating (drunk or sober) without the worry of experiencing the embarrassment of post urinal backsplash. While it seems to be a time for global economic unity, more importantly it is a time for worldwide accord in the fight against thoracic (and sweat pants) terrorism. Crier Staff Editor - Mark Chapman Associate & Copy Editor - Yvonne Haddock Business Manager - Benjamin Redder Secretary - Ned Milliken SA Representative - Matt Roseler Faculty Advisor - Paul McNaney EDITORAL: ON THE SMOKING ISSUE A Student Proposal to Resolve the “Smoking Situation” at C.C.d. A lot of talk has gone back and forth on this issue. However, there have been precious few answers put forth. Well now we have at Least One! ' % > , This Proposal { S-l } , may well be the answer as it is good common sense , fair and broad- based. Here are the Nuts and Bolts of S - 1. The underling issue here is the New York State Law “The Clean Indoor Air Act “implemented In July 2003. This Prohibits smoking, virtually anywhere inside and around a public building anywhere in New York State or in any “Covered Structure “, even outside! However the Law dose also provide for Exemption, and Waivers to requirements; And they Have been Granted!! Therefore if C.C.C, applied for one these Exemptions or Waivers, we could erect a “ Smoking Shack “ Outside away from any buildings so our Smokers do not have to Stand Out in the Elements (or around the Doors & Buildings} to have a smoke. Also we could remodel one room (I know of at Least one that is Hardly Used} in the Commons Building. It could be fitted with the Necessary “Containment & Ventilation Systems” to Comply with the Law. Close Circuit Cameras, feed into our existing safety office would cover, safety and compliance concerns! Hooooold ON, Why should Non - Smoking Students, or the Taxpayers Pay for This? They shouldn’t, the money for this project could come from selling “Smoking Permits” like Parking Permits. I would be OK with buying one to keep warm and dry anytime. We charge a rate of say S 25 per year to students and Staff Etc (less than most school workbooks}. Presuming we sold say, 100 per year or more, that would give the school some S 2, 500 + every year and S 25,000 over 10 years to pay for this project. With that level of money coming in, this project would be very “Do-able “. It would also put an end to the conflict on campus and protect the Health, Rights and Freedom’s of all! Tell us what YOU - Think about this, all points of, view and suggestions welcome! by Mark Chapman Et AL Only the good die young Many of us know someone who died tragically. Whether it be a car accident or some other type of unfortunate chain of events. This is especially troubling if you knew the person well. Thankfully, I have not been best friends with anyone who has died so quickly. I attended the funeral of a classmate this October. Samuel Thomas Collins passed away unexpectedly on his way to school on October 12th. This was his first semester here at CCC. Billy Joel said it best when he said “Only The good Die young”......... I went to his funeral on a cold and rainy Saturday in October. Instead of a eulogy his family encouraged anyone who wished to say a few words. I traveled with a few other students and staff from the school and decided I would be the one to say something. I said to the entire congregation that I had only known Sam for a short period of time but something I will never forget was his smile and positive attitude from the Student Leadership Conference. They showed you a statue and told you to pray They built you a temple and locked you away But they never told you the price that you pay For things that you might have done..... Only the good die young This has made me realize how precious our lives are. If we take life for granted we might not even be alive tomorrow to see it. Sam was a loving caring person who had just started his life in the real world and wasn’t even given the chance to live it. He was taken too soon. Many of us have questioned our faith in God we believe in when we come across times like these. I know I have though “Why him/her?” and “Why am I still alive?”. Also “Why are the pedophiles and murders of this world still alive, when young people who had everything to live for, are dead?”. ...They say there’s a heaven for those who will wait Some say it’s better but I say it ain’t I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints Sinners are much more fun... And only the good die young Student Starts Petition Drive A recent positive action by the college was the marking of the fifty foot line, along with placement of seating and butt cans, in front of the Classroom Building. This has had noticeable positive effects, as very few smokers have been observed within these markings since they were installed. Public Safety has noted that night time class attendees still tend to smoke within the lines, but any progress is good. If all doors were as clearly marked as this one, there would be far fewer complaints from non-smokers. With fewer complaints from non-smokers, there would be less sentiment for creating a smoke free campus. Therefore both smokers and non-smokers may wish to support this petition and express their desires to the college administration. Petitions can be found at the Senate office (downstairs in the Commons Building), or from any senator. By: Staff Writer Before thinking “My life sucks!” think about the fact that you’re alive instead of dead. Your life may “suck” but at least you have a life. Be thankful don’t waste it. People all over the United States are already trying to compare them to the 1972 Dolphins team that went completely undefeated. While going 11 and 0 is no small feat, they still have 5 games to play against power teams like Seattle and San Diego. After Peyton Manning finally beat the Patriots in Foxborough and beating the seemingly unstoppable Bengals, they are on the way to at least a 14-2 season and a playoff birth. Their new and improved defense is what is really doing it this year and is what they were missing last year. I personally am going out on a limb here and saying you are most likely to see Indianapolis and Carolina at Ford Field in Detroit on Feb.5 in Super Bowl XV. By the time you finish reading this article you will probably either be pissed off or glad that you read it. Whatever! Exactly that, you don’t like that statement... tough. How did life piss you off this morning? You got up on the wrong side of the bed, you hung out all night with Mr. Bud, or maybe your girlfriend or boyfriend pissed you off. What was it? Hmmm... I see you didn’t get laid last night, or maybe the shit you smoked wasn’t good enough. So now you’re pissed off at the whole world. I am mandated to attend school because; I didn’t inhale, I didn’t sniff, didn’t pop those pills: none of these reasons were my fault. I’ve heard them all. Well isn’t that a shame; so you blame life and the entire world. You come to school tired, hung over, accompanied by lack of sleep. We all have our reasons, but that’s not the reason you should hate your life or be angry at the whole world. Greet your friends with a hug, a kiss, pay them a complement. Perhaps, tell them how well they look, smell, or just tell them how glad you are to see them. Excuse me, am I asking too much? Think of how bad you would feel if you lost a friend and didn’t tell them something that you wanted to tell them for a long time. Be glad that a god (for those who have faith in a higher being) gave you another chance to breath, see, walk and talk. That friend will never do those things ever again. Just remember how many people today are less fortunate than you, so be thankful and glad for those moments. Don’t judge other people for what they wear, how they look and what their preference of gender is. I look into the mirror every morning and try to judge myself, but I can’t. Based on that, I can’t judge anyone else. I don’t have the privilege, the knowledge, the wisdom or permission from my higher being to judge myself. So you should remember that if you can’t judge yourself, you should not judge anybody else. There’s only one person that can judge us and we all know who that is. Life is what you make of it and nothing more. Don’t blame life for your screw-ups, misfortunes, lack of getting the grade in school, fighting with your significant other or any other complaints you might have. Enjoy life today and everyday. Have a tote, a drink, do something good for somebody and enjoy life. Let’s remember those young men and women who died for our country and will not have that chance of seeing the joy of life. They have sacrificed their youth for us to have a better life, think of them and live your life to the fullest. Those people that perished in the World Trade Center destruction didn’t have a chance either. I bet the people that perished had one last wish to give their loved ones a kiss and tell them how much they love them. Don’t go to bed mad at each other, and if you do wake up give thanks for the new day and tell those around you how much you appreciate them. Love them and give them a huge hug and a kiss.
