corning community college THE CRIER October 12th “The Voice of the CCC Student Body” Fall 2005 Let us know what you think: www.cee_cee_response@yahoo.com Student Association Gives Challenge By Staff Writer X * \ > Daniel Hartman, of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, introduced a challenge resolution at the Thursday, September 8th meeting of the Student Association’s General Assembly meeting in regards to Hurricane Katrina emergency relief funds. Mr. Hartman noted that the Phi Theta Kappa group had pledged $100 to start the fund on its way. • When hearing of a grass roots effort by students to help those in need, the Student Association of Coming Community College offered to match up to $2,500 in donations for this cause'. The General Assembly resolution, which was passed, challenged the staff and faculty of the college to also match student-raised funds. If this could be done the college could contribute $7,500, or more, to the American Red Cross for this cause. Students, student clubs, and organizations did band together to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief. The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society donated the pledged $100 and many other clubs and organizations joined in the effort with significant donations. Collection containers were placed in the Commons and the Activities Programming Committee held put-put golf games on Wednesday, September 14, for the same purpose. Professor Dale Clark is shown below putting for one of several hole-in-ones as part of his contribution to the cause. Student clubs and organizations raised a total of $ 1,650.00, the golf putt-putt added $120.00, collection jugs added $ 181.00, athletics gave $311, and faculty/ staff donations totaled $1025.00. The Student Association match was added, with an increase to $2,613.00. Checks for a total of $6,000 will be presented to the American Red Cross on Tuesday, October 18, by representatives of the college at the Commons lobby. A very large thank you goes out to all who participated and donated .to this worthy cause. Goddess Statues Found By: Mary Saltsman Archeologists found two Greek goddess statues recently at an ancient site on the Island of Crete that are from the 2nd or 3rd century B.C. as reported in Yahoo News. Archaeologist, Anna Michel, said they were found lying down in front of the ancient theatre where they once stood and are the figures of Athena and Hera. The island has had civilization in that area that dates as far back as 3000 B.C. “This is one of the rare cases,” says Michel, “when such works are discovered in the building where they initially stood.” The only flaw in the well'preserved statues is that Hera’s head has broken off. The Italian School of Archaeology, along with the Greek State archaeologists, have dug at the site since the early 19th century. Other historic finds include a stadium, fortifications, baths, temples and even an early Christian church founded by Saint Titus. A little history... Gortyn, the capitol and center of Crete, prospered during Roman and classical times. The kingdom faded when the Arab’s invaded in A.D. 824. According to Greek Mythology, Hera was the most beautiful goddess and sister/wife to Zeus, the son and successor of Kronos, the supreme god. Athena is called the goddess of war. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love, were attending a wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Eris, the god of discord, was resentful that he was the only god not invited to the wedding. Out of anger, he placed a golden apple, “The Apple of Discord,” engraved with most beautiful on it in the three goddesses’ presence. Each goddess believed it was their own. In order to claim the treasure they asked Zeus to choose between them. Zeus then passed on this challenge to a mortal named Paris. Paris was son to the King of Troy. The King abandoned him as a baby when he was told by an oracle that Paris would bring ruin to the city and death to the royal family. He was raised by a Shepard and grew into one as a man. To Paris’ surprise, he was visited by three goddesses who each promised him a prize if he chose the most fair. Aphrodite offered him the love of a woman most famous for her beauty, Helen of Sparta. Hera offered him kingdoms and riches beyond his dreams. Athena offered him to be a warlord. Paris was a romantic and gave Aphrodite the apple. He then set sail with his newly discovered brother, Prince Hector of Troy, to take his prize Sparta. Helen was already married to Menelaus, King of Sparta. When Helen fell for Paris’ seductions and left for Troy with him, the king was full of wrath and gathered an army to war against Troy. Myth calls this the “Trojan War”. The prophecies all came true with the death of Paris’ family and the destruction ofTroy. Paris and Helen lived on and he ironically received all three of the goddesses’ offers. He was a champion of war, received a kingdom, and lived out his days with Helen. Many argue that this really happened and it has been said that the three goddesses were really once mortals themselves, but because they did great things, they became immortal to the people. It is easy to see how this could happen because it happens today. Elvis became immortal to many, and thousands of years from now when our history is dug up, the same may be said of our legends. Finger Fraud is a Win for Wendy’s! By Matt Roseler Remember the finger in the bowl of Wendy’s Chili? Yeah, well it was all fingered out back on September 9th, when Ayala and Jaime Plascencia were obliged to admit their attempt to extort great quantities of money from the fast food chain: Wendy’s. What is even more amazing than the story these two concocted, and the lengths as to which they went to make the story somewhat believable, is the fact that Wendy’s had originally offered a reward of $ 100,000 to anyone who could help in proving the hang nail of a story to be a farse. What is even more amazing than the reward is the fact that Wendy’s attempted to back out of the deal when two people did come forward with information that led to the truth: the fingertip was planted. It was purchased from a co-worker of Jaimie Plascencia’s who had lost the finger in a truck lift accident way back in December. Who can even imagine that the nail biting executives up in Wendy’s headquarters would be that stingy with $100,000 knowing full well that these two people who came forward had just saved them hundred’s of thousands -if not millions- of dollars by relinquishing their smudged name? Shame, shame, shame. Well, enough finger pointing. It is apparent that the media indeed did its job and helped Mike Casey and a woman who wishes to remain anonymous (for safety reasons) get their money from underneath the thumb of Wendy’s management. Man, this is really babyish, don’t yah think? Guys, quit sucking your thumbs -in fact be grateful you still have them. I mean, come on, WWDTD? (What would Dave Thomas do?) Bondulic The person that came up with this idea of having a youth center in Corning could not have come up with_ a better idea/ The center is a good way of keeping the kids off the streets and preventing them from being mischievous, or getting into trouble. The youth center was opened in 1980 and is run by a , family service society. They are funded by the United Way, and also from some corporate donations. This is a great place for kids to come after school; they can do their school work, and afterwards have some fun. Oh, let's not forget the free snacks at 2:30pm, dinner at 5:00pm and another snack at 7:00pm. The only requisite is that you be between the ages of eight and eighteen years old. The location of the center is at 79 Flint Ave. off W. Pulteney St. and their hours are 2:30 PM - 7:30 PM from September to June and 11:30AM - 7:30 PM from July through August. For parents that don't get home until the evening hours, this is one place that your child should be. I had the privilege of interviewing the program director. Miss Tricia Shirey who explained all the program rules, what's expected from the kids, and their conduct at the center. There are offer too many activities -to list but I strongly suggest that if you have kids between'these ages you should send them there. Tricia explained that at any given day there's an average of forty-five to fifty-five kids attending the center's ^fter school activities. When the kids enter the building, they are asked to sign in and when they leave the building they sign out. At all times the kids are supervised by an adult and there's a slim chance that your child will stray away. The center also offers a social worker; in the event of a child/ teenager having problems at home, school or social issues they can talk to Mrs. Michele Mayer. I didn't get the privilege of meeting her, but if she is anything like Tricia then the kids will really appreciate her. At the center, the kids are taught how to clean up after themselves f ^ ' Rebuttal on Abused Women By: Vazmenko Bondulic After the article was printed on Women who are abused, I received a lot of positive and negative responses. Some, to say the least, were very critical and I was told I was totally of base for making statements that are not true to form. Why weren't they true to form? Is it because I touched on a sore subject? Well, we all know that sometimes the truth hurts. Many times we don't want to admit the truth but there comes a time in our lives when we must and as much as we hate it, it hurts. My objective was not to arouse women who are stuck in a bad relationship on purpose. In my own experience, I have dealt with many women in this respect. So why would I not do a story about the truth and facts? Just remember, no matter how it was written I am on your side. After speaking with several women who came forth and confronted me, I've explained my side as best as I could and after hearing me out, and then me listening to their side, they then understood where I was coming from. when they are done eating or playing games. - The center is an escape from peer pressure. I am sure lots of kids have to deal with pressure at home, school and with friends. By going to the center they have an outlet to let steam off and vent any frustrations they may have. When I was growing up they didn't have centers in NYC, it was the streets and the name of the game was "Survival". When my kids were growing they didn't have a center to attend, but they did have an after school program that only lasted until 5 PM. They didn't get anything like what the Youth Center in Corning has to offer. Maybe they got a small snack but that's it, and when the school program was over you had to go and pick up your kids. It wasn't safe for them to walk home, especially in the winter. For a moment, a thought went through my head, "If only I could lie about my age and be able to get into the youth center for all those freebies,-like recreational activities, free snacks, meals, somebody that would listen to me when I down, and I wouldn't have to cook and do any dishes." Many of families out there should be happy that there is such a place for the kids to attend and that they are well taken care off. There is nothing like having the peace of mind that your kids are safe, taken care of, in a safe environment and that they are fed. i ^ / To the entire staff: my hat goes off to you and a standing ovation for a job well done and to all your future work at the center. In the future I will be writing more about the center, and hopefully I can volunteer there. To all parents out there: if your child is between the ages of eight to age eighteen, you should enroll your child in the youth center. Not only will this make you happy to see your child in a wonderful place, but also your child will be happy. THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A HAPPY PARENT WITH A HAPPY CHILD! I understand that sometimes it's very hard for a woman to get out of an abusive relationship but again it's not an excuse to stick around. There are a lot of agencies that are willing and able to help those that are in need of' help. So you women out there, it's never too late to do anything about it. I know it's easier said than done. Seek out your family, your friends, and other avenues to help you get on with your life. There is a lot of controversy, but it is my job as a writer whether it is for the Crier or any other newspaper, to bring out the reality of the news that's going on in the world and on a daily occurrence. Who out there wants to be mentally, physically, and sexually abused? Nobody! So get off that chair, stop feeling bad for your self and do something about it. If you have more concerns and some of you women want to meet me face to face you can email me at vbonduli@corning-cc.edu or at j ohnboyclublimelight@yahoo.com. Hope to hear from you.
